Do you try to avoid shifting when the car is cold?

I think so, but only in terms of safety. I don't like backing out of driveways/parking spots. Backing in is fine, since you had a clear view of it during the approach.

Actually I heard that it's better for an auto transmission if you back in while the transmission is warm/hot and drive out in drive while it's cold. It's better for transmission.

I think I read once several years ago, before i even became a mechanic, that shifting an automatic transmission while the car was cold was not good for it. To this end for the longest time I would back into parking spots all the time. Since then I have gotten lazier, but the extremely cold temperatures of late have me thinking again. Is it a good idea to back into my driveway?

Along the same lines, my dad said to me many years ago that the trans warms up quicker when in Neutral rather than Park. Any truth to this?

I dunno, but I bet it warms up quicker with the parking brake on and in Drive...

Dropping the trans into gear while on high idle does not seem too great. Backing in prior to cold mornings is probally a good idea. Our manual is a bit stiff during the 1-2 shift in cold conditions despite the RP GearMax. We start out in 2nd gear for the first run of the day during cold conditions.

I thought it was a sickness but I now see that I have friends that are just as sick as me. I have never mentioned my thoughts on this to another living person. I thought plenty of times "you are sick" now I come to BITOG and see the exact thing I had thought of. It's so nice to know I not alone in the world.

Great minds think alike gang. Keep maintaining those vechicles. You guys rock.

I don't know, All My vehicles drop the idle right before the transmission is engaged. I don't know if it a function of the ECU and the ECT working in concert or some kind of programming but the only time I can shift at high idle is if I pull the master fusable link(100 amp).

I do agree that backing in is better for safety but I have 3 vehicles and a 3 car garage and a two car driveway. Life is hard enough getting to my parking spot.

LMAO! Anal Retentive/OCD Car maintainers unite!

I`m not a transmission expert but I have read quite a bit on my Chevy 4l60e trans.I know my trans produces maximum line pressure in reverse which probably would be hard on it while cold.
