Do you often use store brand/minor brand oils

I'm not a fanboi to any major/minor brand, store brand, or line within brands.

35 years to date and no lubrication related issues, no noises, timing chains, and the under valve covers have been fine(*). Any crosshatches that I've looked at have been there (*)

(*) bar a couple of previous owner neglect issues.

Back when M1 was 5W20, my Parents R16 was using 20W50, and had very similar non issues.

Normally major brands. However, the last several were all on some type of closeout price. O'R Havoline ProDS, AAP QSUD 0w20 and Idemitsu 0w20. All ended up significantly lower priced than store brands. Not sure Idemitsu considered a 'major'.

At it's current price the new Super Tech Syn 0w20 will be in consideration for future purchase.

No

Mostly, what ever is the cheapest on the day I am buying. Warren oil store brands are my favorite. Never touch Mobil, QS Pennzoil, Castrol or anything that advertises. That's what you pay for. My turbo car never sees synthetic and has run cheap API certified oil for 32 years. No oil problems ever.

Supertech is name brand, right? I'm moving from Mobil to Supertech, although I've used Penzoil that was on sale. Really, I'll probably just start using cheapest, unless if it can be shown to have clear benefit (supposedly Mobil 1 gear lube is right up there, only slightly behind Amsoil, but I'm not sure how bad ST gear lube really is).

I consider ST a store/minor brand.

Drove my 1999 nissan altama for 15 yrs , using conventional oil. Never name brand oil. Ran supertech, wolf head, k mart . Never any issues . Most likely because of 3,000 mile oil changes .

I will use store brands as long as I know who makes it, though I often find that major brands go on sale much more frequently whereas store brands rarely go on sale. Once you factor in discounts and/or rebates, the major brands end up being cheaper than the store brand.

I seriously doubt that someone using name brand SN rated oil versus someone using WPP ST SN oil, in the proper grade, for a reasonable OCI (like 5K) would ever see any benefit...in other words a 5K OCI would keep both cars running indefinitely....you really are paying for advertising.

If I was going to extend my OCI, I probably would feel better with PYB or GTX since they probably exceed the standard rather than just meeting it...I'm not saying this applies to all 'name brand' dinos.....

I stock up on synthetics from Supertech, Resolute, Citgo and Harvest King. My rule is if a synthetic is on sale under $2.50 a quart then stock up. I run these oils in almost everything with 8-9k intervals. No issues.

I've seen this thought process before and I don't understand it.

What makes you think the Supertech is 'just meeting' the standard?
Why would you think it would be processed and blended in any way differently from the name brand?

With zero insight into the company's quality control and performance criteria, how do you justify this claim?

It is not my intent to single out the poster here, but this claim gets repeated regularly.

All that can be said about any oil is that it meets the standard as printed on the bottle.

Now, before everyone gets into a tizzy with 'but PYB had some insane low Noack numbers a while ago!', I will ask you to just provide some great data that shows how the complete package of PYB is statistically superior in performance to Supertech or any other house brand.

Bring your data boys, and demonstrate the name brand product performance exceeds in real world conditions.

Looking forward to your response!

Part of me is tempted to run SuperTech synthetic 0w20 for the life of my '15 Accord just to prove it's fine oil. But the other part of me knows I'd never have any issue so why bother putting any time or energy into doing it.

That same part of me wants to run it in our leased '17 Civic, but with my luck some clueless yahoo at the Honda dealer would find some reason to complain about it when it came time to turn it in.

I'm not an oil "shopper". I buy oil based on spec's. I use Mobil1 because I like to extend my OCI's and I feel it is a good bargain. If I was not extending OCI's I would probably use ST conventional.

I've used Mobil1 (off and on) since it came out in the mid 70's as a 5w-20. I ran it in my newly rebuilt 1958 Ford wagon with the I6. I was a thin oil guy back then. The old '58 didn't care. Ran smooth and quiet. In 1980 I overheated the old Ford going up a mountain in Arizona in the summer pulling a loaded 12' U-haul trailer. Pulled off the highway and let her cool down (did not shut off the motor) and went on my way to Phoenix. Motor and oil didn't care.

Sorry for all the I's.
