Do you inflate by manual specs or tire specs?

I have always gone by recommendation on door placard. I also run PSI a tad higher than what is listed, but I never run the max inflation on the tire's sidewall. In the GLI it's recommended to run 39PSI when cold (I run 40PSI). The Xterra is 35PSI cold (I run 36PSI). I run my tires only a pound higher in hopes that if it drops a little pressure and I don't check, it's closer to recommendation.

Just curious, but being relatively new, don't your vehicles have some type of TPMS?

Yes, though passive (axle/wheel speed sensor) on the GLI and direct on the Xterra. Since the X is the wife's car, I prefer a proactive approach.

Honestly, even on the Xterra, it doesn't warn until it's about 7-10 PSI lower than recommended. I just prefer knowing ahead of time and choose to not rely on gizmos. They're like oil pressure lights; you don't generally get a warning until almost too late. On the GLI, it was about 7 PSI low once and I never got a light, but being they were all that low, maybe with the axles rotating at the same rate it thought it was normal...

Understood and fully agreed on the approach.

And yes, the passive systems typically won't indicate a problem if all 4 tires have the same PSI, even when all 4 are equally underinflated.
