I'm about to change the coolant for the first time in my Civic and I don't have the drain bolt washer it says to replace. I also don't have liquid gasket it says to put on the threads of the bolt... Are these necessary or can I reuse the washer and do without liquid gasket??? Thanks.

Reuse it. If it leaks get a new one and swap it in quick. I have done it.
Best are metal outside, rubber inside. OilTite is one brand. Buy two.

If it does not drip when tightened it is ok.
And i have also had one that something needed replaced, likely the washer or bolt itself; if you tighten it all the way then overtighten and it still leaks, then overtightening wont solve your drip (as much as you want it to) and you need new.

I didn't do anything special when i did the coolant in my 07 Civic. Drain, re-tighten with the OEM parts and refill. Zero issues.
Drain bolt washers are the most idiotic thing ever thought off.
I threw it out with the first OC and have not used one since. 130,000 miles worth of oil changes in my Civic alone and i have no issues.
I save $10 worth of buying useless washers with just one vehicle.

Thanks for the info! I just noticed several electrical connections sitting under the drain bolt... Does coolant just drip all over those or do you need to disconnect them and try to move them? It looks it's going to be a pain.

Just wrap some plastic around them, I don't think it would be an issue anyhow as the wires are on the exterior and are designed to get wet.
