Do you ever use used oil??

I use quality synthetics in my SpecV, but I only run them for 5000 miles max, my friend's SpecV burns oil like there is no tomorrow... so whatever used oil comes out of my car.. goes into his car.

I also do this with two of my other cars... I usually use GC in the Subaru Legacy but for short OCIs. When I drain it... it goes straight into the VW New Beetle, after all.. it's vw certified and still clean with plenty of tbn. Plus the Volkswagen is gonna get sold, so who cares... chances are the next owner is going to take it to jiffy lube whenever she/he remembers, so why waste my money?

I save all my old PP and my buddy dumps it in his little honda beater that burns oil at about a qt per week.

Why not just use it longer in the initial vehicle and save yourself the hassle of contaminating oil in the transfer. Unless you track your car, you can run longer intervals than 5K even with a "fast and the furious" driving style. Buddy runs his G37 with GC for 8500 and he drives it hard.

I had a neighbor who had a Chevy van that went through oil like there was no tomorrow. When my van was new mid 1980's I changed oil every 2000-3000 miles. I bottled the oil in gallon jugs and gave it to him. He used it for a long time until he got the cash to replace the van.

I totally disagree with that. Whoever buys the thing is screwed.
 
Where I use to work a guy had a mid 70s Chevy V8 he used for his going to work car. This was in the mid 90s. Anywhy he had lifter clatter in cold weather and I told him to try M1 oil. His response was"too much money". I jokeingly said I would give him my 10K oil for his Chev. To my suprise he said OK. He used my oil for four years and never draining the pan. He did change the filter twice a year, and by the way the M1 took care of his lifter clatter. It was funny, every time he needed oil he would say to me "got any Mobil 2 for me".

To be fair, majority of us don't use our oil to its full potential. If he's dumping synthetic oil after only 5k miles, I'm sure that oil still have plenty of life left in it. I really doubt this will cause any problems in the second car that uses it for another 5k miles, unless the first car has major issues with coolant or fuel leaking.

Personally, I still wouldn't do it though. Oil is cheap in the grand scheme of things.
 
You know, I run 3k-4k OCI's on synthetics. My thought process based on some of the flak I've caught on here for doing so is that if the oil has so much life left in it, why shouldn't I be selling it to other members...
 
This topic has been discussed before and I believe the used oil being re-used has been giving the nickname "Mobil 2". The name was given to it by the coworker of a member of this forum, the coworker used to put the forum member's used Mobil 1 into his car and would refer to it as Mobil 2.

I've never done it, but I'll admit I've thought about it. I have an old beater SUV that I'm half trying to see how long I can keep it running, and half trying to destroy. I haven't used Mobil 2 in it yet, but once I can confirm that we are running it into the ground and never going to sell it I might. The reason is b/c I use synthetic in my car (lets not get into why I use synthetic), even though I need to change my oil every 6 months to maintain my warranty. I put about 4k-6k miles on the car a year so the synthetic comes out with usually under 3k miles on it. The SUV gets beaten on and only gets an annual oil change of conventional. I've toyed with the idea of putting Mobil 2 in the SUV but wont do it until I'm sure that vehicle isn't going to be sold.

I also thought about doing it with my new car once. I changed the oil, put in synthetic, and had a slow drip/leak from the drain plug. I had re-used the crush ring washer and it didn't seal well. The oil had less then 25 miles on it, and the only way to stop the drip would've been to remove the plug (thus draining the oil), losing the good synthetic oil. My plan was to drain the oil into the container it came in, that way it shouldn't be any more contaminated then it already was. I decided to just leave it and the drip stopped on its own, but I'll have to clean around the oil pan when I change the oil in a week or two
 
I've only re-used oil once before. It was sitting in my snowblower for about 2 years. During those 2 years, I only used the blower about 3 times, so the oil probably had tons of life in it. But, I wasn't really comfortable leaving it in any longer. So, I drained it and saved it in clean container, figuring I could use it just to top off one of my cars if they ever got a little low. I ended up dumping it into my sister's beater, but I wouldn't have hesitated to pour it into one of my own vehicles.
 
After my work van reached 200K miles I put Mobil 2 in it several times. The heater core went but the engine ran fine.

Because my SpecV gets autocrossed, rallycrossed, and drag raced all the time..

How? have you ever seen used Volkswagens? look under the oil cap... they are ALL filled with varnish and have that yellow goo in the oil cap, mine is the only one I've ever seen that is 100% spotless, even using used oil!!

At least I am using VW-certified groupIV oil that's still good, instead of dumping cheap dino in it (you're not supposed to use dino in VWs, even non-turbo ones)

I'm happy to sell my 5w20 RP that I do 6k OCIs on.
I will re-bottle it in the original RP bottles too.
I always use a new PureOne Gold filter.
Any takers - let me know!!!
