Heck I walk in in my dirty bug splattered motorcycle riding gear and hang it in the office and no one says anything.

I am one the few in my office who wears dress shirts and slacks or chinos to work, most of my coworkers wear casual shirts (although usually not concert tees) and jeans or shorts.
At my first job, I was adamant about wearing casual clothes and keeping my hair long...some managers were really irked by that and one of them always called me "football jersey". I didn't care because I was a "rebel" and HR had assured me that there was no dress code other than covering up...I thought I was caving in when I bought new dark blue jeans and a button down Western shirt with fake mother of pearl snaps for a critical meeting with customers from overseas. I got into work really early to clean up my slides (yes, they were physical foils back then) and found a senior manager staring daggers at me during the meeting...he finally rubbed his hand over his chin and I realized that I had forgotten to shave because I was in such a rush to get to work. Luckily, the schedule slipped and I didn't have to present until the next day after I had cleaned up.
For my next job, I was told at the interview that I would have to wear a suit everyday as the design center was part of a sales office. I agreed because I REALLY wanted the job and bought a couple of suits and some nice shirts...during my first week I noticed that nobody else was wearing suits except for the salesmen when they were making calls. I kept wearing them, then my boss finally decided to try to shame me in front of everybody for falling for his little "gag"...he only told me to wear a suit to get me to buy clothes I wouldn't really need and then wear them to work with people in tshirts.
This manager also made a big point of parking next to a coworker with a new car and putting a big ding in his door...then chewed the guy out for complaining.
You can imagine how that job worked out with a jackwagon boss like that...I moved on in less than a year and leaving was one of the best decisions I ever made. That guy ended up killing the design center because nobody would work for him in time...
After this, I slowly migrated from towards more and more formal workwear...wore polo shirts for a while and never really cared for them, I refuse to wear them at any time now. On the weekends I am happiest in a tshirt with a pocket (long or short sleeve) and comfy jeans...I just feel weird at work in anything but a good quality vertically striped dress shirt and slacks/chinos. I know nobody cares much what I wear and I don't care what they wear...I notice on my trips to our HQ that it's mostly young people looking to climb the ladder and people near retirement who dress up at all, everybody else is pretty casual.
One big thing...NO TIES! I hate them and they're stupid. ;^)
