Do ya'll tip on Non Self-Serve Gas States. I just don't get it....am I supposed to as a customary or not ? I hate when the tank is full, and the attendent is trying to fill another 1/2 gallon, etc, just trying to get the tank to it's MAX.

**** no! They're already charging me $40 to fill up my tank...that's all they get! Usually the attendent is a moron that takes a half hour to wonder over and start pumping gas, and another half hour to find out that it's done pumping.

I guess I was the moron who filled up tanks while working in High School and pumped gas in N.J. Maybe that is why I did not get any tips.

A friend of mine worked for me one dark and stormy night; got robbed; locked in the bathroom all night. I guess that is why he did not work for me again.

One night, quite foggy, an elderly lady came in and told me it seemed to be a good night for a murder. I paid for her gas and told her I was closing up and going home.

No. Due to a stupid state law (NJ and where else?) you are being forced to go through a process that is not required in what, 48 states? That's like tipping at Burger King. Maybe if you ask the guy to do all sorts of checks under the hood and he does them, but just to put the stupid nozzle in the hole until it stops?

NJ and Oregon. I hate not being allowed to pump my own gas in that state. What, is the general public too stupid to do even that? Or just Oregonians? (I know not all Oregonians are stupid, just the ones who set and/or agree with public policy there

) If its something I would do myself in the absence of asinine legislation, there's no way I'll tip.

The only people I let pump their own gas when I worked in NJ were bikers. I was concerned about their paint jobs if I spilled gas on the tanks. I just stood by and watched.

I pumped gas while in college. A gallon of regular leaded cost 55 cents then and only Amoco sold unleaded. I was making about $3.50 an hour and if I busted my arse and cleaned every windshield, checked fluids and added oil on every car I serviced, I might make 5 bucks in tips. If someone asked me for the service, I had no problem doing it and I wouldn't expect a tip, it was full service so what the hey.

BTW, we pumped about 9,000 to 11,000 gallons on any given night. The station had 32 gas hoses. I was never held up, but the station was not virgin in that matter.

Nope. I prefer to pump it myself bc I do it quicker then they do. When it's 10F out, I prefer them to do it.

I just looked up Oregon's gas pumping law, and there is a provision that allows bikers to pump their own gas if they ask to. Maybe it's there so the bikers won't beat up high school and college kids who'd spill gas on their bikes.

A few months ago I stopped at a Chevron in the middle of nowhere, the guy cleaned my windshield, checked the air pressure in my tires, asked if I wanted him to check the oil, and then took my cash right there without me having to go inside to pay. (old pumps with no credit card slots) That's the only time I've ever tipped at a gas station...and I was down right shocked at the service.

In general, it's nice having someone pump my gas when I'm just getting my truck filled up. But if I've got my boat, or a gas can I hate it. I had to pump my own gas in california a little while ago (@2.65 for regular) and it took me at least 5 minutes to figure out how.

I love that in NJ they pump the gas for us when its rainy or cold, AND the gas is 20c+ cheaper per gallon than in other states.

I dont like when they try to fit in every last drip, then spill some over the side. How annoying. Not that I dont do the same once in a while, if the pump lets the fuel out a bit too fast. But I try my best not to and they just want to get the cars through.

I also dont like to hold the attendants up at the station, which makes it harder to measure out the amount of FP exactly in-situ.

Well you have to admire the special training the attendants get! The ONLY 3 times, I have had fuel spilled on my paint in over a million miles, i.e. MANY fuelings. were at stations in states tht have the "no pump" gas policy by customer. One place I stopped at, I had to use the "odd house" (quite literally) and the attendant insisted it was his job to dispense the gas. When going back to the car, the fellow had lit up a cigarette and was in the process of spilling 2 gallons of fuel on the ground!

Gee and I had no special training either!

Based on my "full station experiences," 15 years hence would be too soon for me. With the two gals of fuel spill and the attendant smoking a cigarette, I consider myself lucky, I didnt get hurt and the 50,000 dollar vehicle, he was fueling didnt catch fire.

I used to live in NJ and still get there about once a month. Gas is a bit cheaper there, but I too would rather pump my own.

You can learn a lot of interesting foreign languages, and listen to some exotic third world music, while getting your tank filled in NJ. Don't get me wrong, I have no bias against foreigners, but it seems that 99% of the attendants are from overseas. I am a little concerned about the ones with the Russian accents, because there is a Russian underworld in New York City and one of their scams is selling/distributing untaxed gasoline.

It always amazes me how wary some people are about using credit cards over the internet, but will hand one of these fellows a card, which he walks away with into a private booth, and then returns. Unless the card goes straight into the pump itself and is returned to me, I would prefer to pay with cash.

I have never in my life seen anyone tip a gas station attendant, but would consider it for requested services that used to be routine, such as checking and filling tires, checking oil, etc.

So you'd rather PAY a 20-30c premium in another state for the ability to pump your own gas???

I don't know about NJ, but here the attendent and/or station owner can be fined for letting people pump their own gas.

First of all, you assume a 20 to 30 cent difference. The difference between Vermont gas prices and NJ prices is more on the order of a nickel or so.

Second, in NJ, at a busy station, you may wait up to 5 minutes before an attendant even comes to your vehicle. He starts the pump up, wanders away, and does not return for maybe another 5 minutes. During that time, the pump may have a false trip, and you either have to go out to restart it yourself, or wait for him to return to restart it, after which he wanders away again for a second time.

Then the aforementioned going away out of sight with your credit card, vs. paying at the pump at a self serve, where the credit card never leaves your hand. Then you wait another 3 minutes or so for him to process the card, and return with a slip for you to pay.

So you would prefer to spend all this time buying gas so that someone else will pump it for you???

It is against the law, but I have never heard of anyone being prosecuted for it.

Can you imagine being in jail, and when your fellow prisoners ask you about what you are in for, your answer is "I pumped my own gas"???
