DO WE REALLY NEED FUEL ADDITIVES?

I recently started using a mix of RL and MMO in one of my vehicles. No scientific data, sorry, but the vehicle is running well.

Some fuel additives can be very good.

I was so lucky that I was able to try the difference, in a unscientific real world test(that still goes on).
The result so far, was rather surprising, at least to me, since I have never thought the difference would be this big.

We bought an old Nissan Sunny 2.0 Diesel 1993 model, with 199000 miles(320400km) on the odometer.
Technically, it is in perfect condition, but it was running like [censored].

By the way, Mola; this is NOT the same car where I have used the Rev-X in the transmission(but I will do, as soon as I can).

The owner had always used the best diesel and oil(group 4 and 5) available, and it does not seem to use any oil.

But, he has NEVER used any additives in the fuel.

I had a bottle of F2-21, and decided to try it, and not do anything else(not even change the oil), for some 5-6 tanks of diesel.

The difference is rather surpricing, and can be seen here: https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/f2-21-fuel-additive-makes-a-difference-in-one-car.124999/

I used to use a little acetone in my 97 escort that ran on regular 87 octane

Made a HUGE difference, esp in summer with the a/c on. A small increase in fuel economy, and a slightly smoother idle as well.

I used to put about 1oz in each tank. That lasted for about a couple of years, then it just became a hassle when the syringe I used to extract it from the canister would constantly dry out the rubber suction in a few months time.

I have tried Redline, Regane and Techron. All 3 were added to Shell Premium unleaded. The Techron made the car immediately feel better. It ran smoother than ever. Neither of the other 2 were distinguishable at all. I expected Redline to be the standout but it wasn't.
Anyone else ever compare all 3? Does Techron have something the others don't in it?

How does one test three different fuel additives in the same car? Seems the first one used will do the cleaning and get the credit. Or it may soften & loosen the deposits for the second or third additive to get the credit. How can the final cleaning job be attributed to just one of the additives tested?

I didn't use them one tank after the other. I used them at least 3000 miles apart. However, that is a good point. I used the Techron when I first got the car, which I bought used. That might have done the major cleaning. It's been about 3000 miles so maybe I should go buy another bottle of Techron and see if I get the same result.

I failed to mention that the smoothness I got from the Techron went away as soon as the tank was refilled. So it was temporary. Yet I wonder what it contains, to make for such smoothness?

Every time I put gas in my truck, I put Lucas UCL in the tank, too. Always have a bottle behind my seat.

I also usually get Texaco gas with Techron 'already in it' 50% of the time. The other 50% is BP w/ invigorate or Shell (only 93 'with V-Power'). I always run 89 or 93 octane in my truck. I've read on bitog where someone said 89 is a blend of 87 and 91/93 octane fuel. But, who knows? I'd like to, lol. I'd like to run 89 octane IF this was the truth. I just run 93 in my truck now and then for the extra additives. I think Shell claimed that their 87 and 89 had 2x the required additives, while the V-Power had 5x the amount.

So, I try and get my 'cleaners' in the fuel, and just use Lucas UCL. I wonder how much cleaner is in the fuel compared to buying the cleaner off the shelf, like Techron. I use a bottle of fuel cleaner occasionally, but the last time I've used one is probably over a year ago. But I've never gotten to use something good like Techron. I think today, I will get a bottle of it and some more Lucas UCL.

I really do not think that Lucas UCL does much if anything. I have used Techron and it made one of my cars idle much smoother after a full tank with Techron.

Anyone try using BG 44K? I know a few mechanics that swear by it.

Well, I think it does what it says, and that is be a UCL. Some cars I feel no difference, and some I feel a little extra from under the hood. Never anything much, and it could just be in my head. But, like I said, some cars I can't even tell that I put the Lucas UCL in.

I always could tell a difference in most of my low output V8's, like the 5.0 EFI in my '86 F-150 rated at a stock 185 hp/270 tq (but lots of people tell me after watching my 0-60 vids that it is not a stock cam because of the way it will wind up and passed 5k RPM... that's another story) and especially a '94 Thunderbird I used to have with the 4.6 HO.. I could always feel a difference in the T-Bird.

My wife's 2001 Eclipse GS with the 2.4 4 cyl SOHC, on the other hand, doesn't give a seat of the pants difference IMO.

Also, it's supposed to increase MPG, but I always LOSE MPG because I honestly feel a difference when I use it, and I LIKE to feel the difference, so I don't notice an increase or anything lol.

Well, anyways, I have 5 credits/free $20 on my Autozone card, so I'm going to Autozone and getting the $10 bottle of Lucas UCL, and I'm wondering what cleaner I should get. I'm thinking Techron. What do you guys think I should get (and it has to be from Autozone so I can use my credits).

Yes and a lot of the old content does not take into consideration todays fuel injection systems as far as what is good and what isn't good for them

I am a big fan of the Lucas UCL, but I've been using it at 1 oz per 10 gal (about half the recommended dose), with good results. I don't think Lucas does much cleaning, but it does a great job as an upper cylinder lube.

BTW, I worked at a gas station in high school (one of those one-man booths next to a grocery store). We sold 87, 89, and 93 octane, but we only ever took delivery of 87 octane and 93 octane. Best I can figure is the delivery guy was blending 2 parts 87 and 1 part 93 into our midgrade storage tank. Can't say this is how everyone does it, just that it seems this is the way it was done where I worked.

Mechanic at motorcycle shop told me not to use any additives in the gas because to rich of a concentration was bad for the carbs. He said if I wanted to use anything as a cleaner, just run a few gallons of high octane racing gasoline through the bike. Thoughts?

are you sure you even had a midgrade storage tank?

a lot of stations only have 2 grades in the ground and the pumps actually draw from both tanks when you select midgrade and blend it on the fly according to one of my buddies that works on pumps.

not sure what race gas would do to clean anything honestly... it smells real good though!

did he say how it would be bad for the carbs? also doesnt make a lot of sense.

i've used berryman's b12 chemtool as an all purpose fuel system cleaner from time to time and never had an issue.
