Do they make any decent aftermarket lug nuts?

I would say that most any 1 piece lug nut sold today is a substantial improvement over the 2 piece, sheet metal covered garbage most new vehicles come with.
Yep, our DT keeps several of the worst ones in stock …
They sell them at a fair price - think they are doing a good thing.

I put a set of Gorilla on my F-150. I bought them on Amazon. They are listed as DP Accessories. However, they are just repackaged Gorilla. They are fine in areas where the roads aren't salted. For areas with road salting, I would go with McGard.

Is there some weird lug nut phenomena that has complete evaded my radar over the last four decades?
Yes.
In addition to "the 2 piece, sheet metal covered garbage...", they also came up with plastic caps which resemble hex heads which need a tool to remove so one can access the actual fastener.

Besides OEM, any decent chrome ones out there? Some of my OEM on the Tundra are starting to show there age.
I go to a local non franchise tire shop to get new lug nuts for my stuff. They buy bulk one piece chrome plated lug nuts.
The 12x1.5mm lug nuts I got from there to put on my Nissan leaf in 2017 and wife's car in 2018 are still good to go.

I have a set of el cheapo Amazon OMT lug nuts on the van - the steelie acorns can’t be used on alloys. Seems to be working fine, for $25/set I’m not complaining.

This ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I have both on all 3 of my vehicles. Easily deformed, and / or swollen OEM sheet metal covered lug nuts are nothing but trouble... That you don't want to find out about when you realize your lug wrench won't fit at night, on a dark road.
If you live in the rust belt,it's probably a good item to check and have a back up plan, good advice, I totally agree

I can honestly say that, in 41 years of driving and owning cars, I have never once had to replace a lug nut.
It depends on the car. Some manufacturers use these stupid capped nuts and over time and visits to shops with pneumatic impacts, the caps deform and swell. Mine kept getting stuck in my socket. I finally swapped to value priced solid ones. It isn't a new issue because I remember this on a 1981 Dodge Omni I had eons ago.
