Do they make any decent aftermarket lug nuts?

"Specific spots" means destinations with chancy parking or specific spots in the bolt pattern?
Ford hubs will have a paint mark on a lug stud indicating a balance point. The hole on the wheel that is next to the valve stem goes on that stud and the wheel lock then goes on that. I'm weird. Also if possible I try to have the center cap align based on the valve stem. again I'm weird.

Next you'll be telling us you belong to a website that obsesses over motor oil...

I purchased the solid, one piece lug bolts for my son's Jeep Renegade from Madness Autoworks. I am completely satisfied.

I bought a set of Dormans to replace the terrible swollen ones that came on my Scion with factory alloys. That was two years ago and so far they’ve been fine. I had to buy a 21.5mm socket and use a dead blow hammer to get a few of them off because for some idiotic reason they were tapered.

Gorilla and mcgard are solid cast...

This ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I have both on all 3 of my vehicles. Easily deformed, and / or swollen OEM sheet metal covered lug nuts are nothing but trouble... That you don't want to find out about when you realize your lug wrench won't fit at night, on a dark road.

I just went to VIOC on Saturday. Primarily for a tire rotation, in and out, no oil change.
Had a coupon for $25 off SS or FS,(just in case) oil had 2k miles on it. Told them go ahead do both actions.
Well, they get the oil and checks done, starting on the rotation. Couldn't get the socket on
one of the lug nuts, swollen madly. Sorry, you might go to a Belle or Discount. We'll take the
rotation of the invoice and make a note of this event. That'll be $73
So, now this week I have to call, make appt., and truck on over to the other end of town.
All this because I'm on a walker now, waiting for my March hip replacement.
Otherwise, I would be in my shop, Ram on the hoist, rotating Michelins, draining Val out,
screwing on a TG2 and filling with Pennzoil Ultra Platinum or ? DT prob gonna sell me 20 new ones to get
one bad one off.
Just another day.

Is there some weird lug nut phenomena that has complete evaded my radar over the last four decades?

I can honestly say that, in 41 years of driving and owning cars, I have never once had to replace a lug nut.
