I've come across many people that have Oil consumption issues in their Subaru motors. Is this just because of the Flat engine design?

Do Porsche flat engines consume oil?

no it does not have anything to do with the boxer engine configuration.....lots of inline 4s and 6s consume oil v engines as well

All engines consume oil by design. Some oil will always be sucked into the combustion chamber simply because heat and pressure are so high. Even though you have oil rings on the pistons to scrape off oil, it doesn't hold a candle to the extreme vacuum and pressures built up during the combustion cycle.

My BMW boxer motorcycle uses oil at a pretty good rate. This alarmed me until I read that this is common. Typically around 30K miles they slow down or stop. I don't think it's a boxer thing, afterall Northstars with their apetite for oil are not boxers. Some engines will consume oil regardless of whether they are a boxer or not. There may be other reasons specific to that engine, like low tension rings for example.

According to Subaru 1qt per 1000mi is acceptable. I just changed my oil earlier because the dipstick looked dry after sitting for 20 minutes. There was plenty of oil when I drained it, but once I refilled the empty jug 1qt was missing.

I was running castrol Edge 5w30 for 3,400mi. I think I may send a sample off just to see how it did. My gas mileage was great when comparing to Ultra. Maybe because Edge is so thin?

Our Subaru is weird...some oci's it seems to consume quite a bit, and others hardly any. Recently it doesn't seem as bad, has about 41k on it now.

My Subaru consumes 5w-30 at a rate of about 1 quart per 2000 miles. It does not consume 10w-30, 5w-40, or 15w-40 of any brand.

Hi,
Shar - IME Porsche flat engines consume very little oil

Most "old" aircooled VWs were/are very easy on oil too!

My current car uses nothing between 10k OCIs

You have now heard from a long time Porsche/VW Owner
