I reached 25000 blocked tracks over the weekend. This is in about 6 months. I am a average web surfer. I do have a life outside of my laptop.

BTW - 2 blocked tracks for BITOG.

I have DNT Me now, it is a great add-on for my browser. Since I installed it I now have 106,158 tracking attempts blocked. Right now it says 2 social networks and one company are trying to track me here on BITOG...

Another good little add-on I discovered last week is Flagfox. It is an add-on for Firefox that shows a flag for the country of origin of any web site in my browser, it puts the flag in my browser bar and I can hover over it and see where the site originates and its IP address. If I click the flag I get even more info about the site. Flagfox info is useful in helping me to avoid spyware and malware because the vast majority of it comes from Russia and Eastern Europe. Not all malware is from those areas, but a lot of it is and I welcome any tool to help me avoid it.

Quattro Pete - Would think blocking the ad cookie may block ad generation. Would you mind disabling Ad Block Plus for a moment as an experiment? Want to know how many ads pop up using the other tools you installed only, no ABP. Multiple blocking tools bloat memory and slow surfing speed, want as few as possible running. Thanks.

I have Ad Block Plus, Do Not Track Plus, Flagfox, Key Scrambler, Web Of Trust, Avast Web Rep, two Java add-ons, a video convertor add-on and an Itunes tool bar widget all added to my Firefox browser. My internet surfing speed is super fast. I have noticed no lag time or slow web pages at all. My internet is even faster now that I got rid of Norton Internet Security and am using Avast Internet Security 7. One thing I really like about Firefox is all of the add-ons they have available that actually do enhance my computer and online use.

LeakySeals, I disabled ABP on bitog and the top banner with ads did not return, so I think you're right that DNT is already filtering it out. The list of tracking companies on bitog reported by DNT went from 1 to 2, although they both show up as "Google Analytics".

Me too

YW guys. I am not always able to offer much help here in the computer section so I am glad to be able to pass along good tips when I find them. I think Flagfox is one of the neatest tools I have ever had on my computer. The others are great too.

Jimmy,
Ad Block Plus and DoNotTrackMe are both rules based apps with similar function. They load a huge blocking list, then source that list with each site you visit. So while you spend less time caching ads, there is still a hit to performance. If you can get away with only one, your performance will be better.

At home I have 8GB of RAM, Win 7 but DSL. So I can cache a lot of stuff like a blocking list, but want to prevent or cut down, useless stuff coming across the network.

Right on! Looks like ABP shows per-page stats vs. DNT that shows stats over time. So I can't compare the 2 in a test over a long period of time. Checking the browser for any cookies received will give an indication how well things are working. I'm in a porting lab right now, going to play around with the tools, see what happens.
