Not always and in some cases you're risking if not outright damage at least malfunction such as in variable displacement engines like the 5.7L Hemi which (gasp!) specs 5w20 because of the design of the valve train.

I can appreciate that im jut saying i had 4 civics and put 5w30 in all of them the 1994 and ther 1997 (DX and EX) liked it the most and 5w30 was always perfect for a civic 4-banger since it never had a 6 and this change to specd for 5W-20 surprised me?
I was sharing my experience with the OP im not lying those civics ran great in 5w30 and that is the thickest it ever needed i promise OP that.
