Do I Need JAVA?

Came pre-installed on my computer. Every time it wants to update, it claime trillions of Internet apps use it. AFAIK, I never use it. Don't think I need it. Seems to conflict with Adobe Flash.

Safe to delete?

No. A lot of websites use it.

Best to keep it up to date, as vulnerabilities are often found and quickly patched.

If you're on a website that requires it, which will probably be rare nowadays, and it complains that Java needs to be installed, it'll tell you. That said, close out of your browser and go directly to Java.com to install it. Don't use any conveniently-provided hotlinks.

I haven't had Java installed on any of my home computers in years. Nothing I visit needs it, unless there's some Internet cooties trying to trick me into installing it. Its presence is considered a security risk for exactly that reason.

With those responses I'm even more confused.

I said it seems to conflict with Flash because after I let JAVA update, my coputer says I need Flash even though my control panel says it's installed. I can not play videos from You Tube and others.

Unrelated.

Flash needs to be kept up to date, as well. Vulnerabilities are found often.

Does this new computer have a Blu-ray drive? will you watch blu-rays on it?
I ask, b/c some of those "trillions" of devices that run java include every blu-ray player on the market. if i'm not mistaken, good chucks of the blu-ray "format"(obviously i'm talking software, not hardware)are JAVA Derived. Esp. their copy protection bits.
