so do all synthetics help clean out engines, saylike mobil 1 high mileage says it does. but like if someone went down and bought super tech syn, would it help clean out the motor, now im not talking severe sludge, im talking about things like a light varnish for example, cuz i dont really buy that any oil alone will help clean actual chunks of sludge.

Yes... And you can still have junk in your engine with only running Synthetic as I found out with my recent ARX run.
I would say Synthetic might leave your engine cleaner than Dino, but it's such a small margin IMO.

very possible and common. according to their own chemistry , it is possible they can help do some kind of cleaning. sometimes you will see varnish in engines that appears to be 'peeling' off. just bear in mind, all synthetics are not created equal.
the reason i ask is that i recently switched to Quaker State Q Horsepower and have been using mobil 1 since i got the truck about 20000 miles ago, but i also want to switch to the family fleet over to it, cuz its just a good deal at the wl mart.

The advantage of synthetics is that they:
1. Pour when very cold, and;
2. They don't boil off, or sludge when very hot.
As for lubricating, all modern oils do a great job, compared to years ago.

A little varnish is harmless.
Some of the ester additives are good cleaners.
PP will keep an engine clean and do some cleaning on a dirty one.

No they're not saying that. They're saying over time Mobil 1 High Mileage will clean up an engine that has sludge.

Both Mobil 1 High Mileage and Pennzoil Platinum make cleaning claims. And as far as PP - I believe it. I finished and OCI and cut open my Pure One filter to find all kinds of debris and sludge in the pleats. Of course I used some MMO for the last 250 miles...
I used Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 in '00 MB E430 the first time when the car had 90k miles on odometer, before that it had Mobil 1 0W40 all its life. After only 1k miles with PP the oil color was dark and became very dark after 2k miles and almost back after 3k miles. I believe PP is very good at engine cleaning.
As a chemist, I doubt PAO's would do any more than a dino. Also, all the tertiary hydrogens should reduce its stability.
The ester based ones should dissolve more polar things better.
I spent 10 years in the paint industry and have some knowledge of solvency.

Most synthetic manufacturers make the claim that their oil will help clean out some conditions such as sludge. This is not done with a simple chemical reaction, but probably buy diluting the sludge with synthetic (which has a much higher flash point and lower pour point than conventional oil) under high heat and pressure.
