It's not uncommon that you will find some interesting ancestry links that don't relate to your nationality. For example, people that think they are 100% European ancestry will find traces of asian and northern african roots.

Many will show African roots because Surprise---we all came from Africa originally.

Having so-called autosomal DNA testing is fairly useless these days.
Getting your Y-DNA tested or you mitochondrial DNA tested will show, among other things, your "deep ancestry", basically telling you how long ago and where your oldest ancestor bearing that bit of DNA lived. Think thousands or tens of thousands of years.
It will also help connect the dots if you have a paper trail of you more recent ancestors.
For example, after having my Y-DNA tested, I was contacted by a man who is a perfect match. His last name isn't the same as mine, but is one with which my family has been associated for years. According to the data provided, there's a 99% chance we share a common ancestor no longer ago than 4 generations. My Y-DNA matches others with my surname and who are known ancestors, so either this guy's ancestor was adopted from our family or was the result of ...extra-curricular activities.
I've seen photos of him, and he resembles a taller version of my Dad and uncle.

In Europe, there are a handful of different Y-DNA "clans" as well as mtDNA "clans". You can find out which of these you belong to, and some clans are more common in some countries than others, but pinning down your 'recent' country of origin is easier with a paper trail, augmented by DNA.
For example, my mtDNA which is passed from mothers to their children, points to Ireland, Scotland, and England for my mom's mothers' line, but originally (thousands of years ago) started in what is now northern Italy. Check out some websites for more detailed stuff. Family Tree DNA has a good one, as does Oxford Ancestors.
You may get lucky, if there's a surname project underway for you surname, you may get the test for a discount, or as I did, for free.

Bear in mind that testing either Y-DNA or mtDNA will give you insight only into 2 lines of your ancestry, and that with each generation, the number of ancestors you have doubles, and that not all genetic material is passed on. This is why someone who knows they have an ancestor who is, for example, a Sioux, can be tested and not show any "Sioux" genetic material unless that ancestor was a direct maternal or paternal ancestor, and even then, the only thing passed on may well be the mtDNA or Y-DNA, not other genetic information which determines physical features.

i am a euro mix of dutch, german (prussian to be exact), english and french. would love to know what my Y-DNA is. i think it may be something like (going backward) dutch, spanish, and then either north african or middle east (thousands of years ago)

I'm not sure if that National Geographic genome porject owuld actually show that.
