I’m in the process of making my own shutters to put on the house, and so far so good! I'm a novice at working with wood, but this seemed like a good way to get my feet wet.

I used the guide below, making a few changes to suit my taste. I made my shutters 4-wide rather than 3-wide, routed the sides of the boards with a 1/4" roundover bit (my first time using a router!), and decided to forgo use of the upholstery tacks since they're bound to rust. I used a solid exterior stain and sealer, applied via a 6" foam roller and a foam brush.

The shutters are attached to the brick with these plastic anchors, the screws embedded into the wood so that I could apply a stain-able wood filler on top (my sloppy attempt is shown). I'll gently sand it down tomorrow when it dries and apply the stain to it. Hopefully it hides the screw holes relatively well when done.

Why not make them functional, closable storm shutters?
It would add to the complexity of the project, and we wouldn’t ever use them as true storm shutters. We just wanted something decorative to break up the newly-painted brick facade a bit.

The brick used to be an ugly shade of brown (I’m normally a fan of natural brick, but this was bad), and it had crumbling, old plastic shutters attached that desperately needed to go. These wooden shutters seem like an upgrade versus what was there before. :)
