Dissappointed with PureONE ADBV

First off, let me make the disclaimer that this is by no means a scientific test or a bash on purolator.

Well, I changed my filter this morning mid OCI. I purposefuly did it before starting my jeep, so that I could see how well the ADBV was working on the PureONE. EDIT: I forgot to add that I have just under 4K on the oil and filter.

I pulled it off and was much much lighter than expected. I also noticed that not nearly as much oil spilled out as I took off the old filter. The Jeep sat for probably 15 hours. Is it possible that the ADBV was bad or is this normal for the PureONE?

I replaced the filter with a motorcraft FL1A and topped off with 1/2 quart pennzoil 10w30 and 1/2 quart pennzoil 10w40 (it's what I had available). On a side note, the engine runs much quieter than just Mobil 1 5w30 alone. I am guessing due to the heavier dino I added. When I started it again, after sitting for 1.5 hours, it was much quieter on start up as well, maybe because of the ADBV working properly on the motorcraft?

I didnt have the time to push in the ADBV and see what came out, nor did I save the filter. Like I said, very unscientific and just my observations.

Anyone else noticed this?

Lots of speculation on the Purolator valve since you tossed it without testing it. When I remove my filters, some oil comes out (but) if I stand it gasket side upright for a couple of minutes, the same amount of oil comes out again sometimes. Then if I stand it upright for even-another few minutes, more oil comes out.

Did you change the oil with the engine warm or cold?

I normally use Motorcraft filters and my experience with those is that you can let them sit for a week and all of the oil still won't have drained out of it.

"FWIW, the Motorcraft and Pure probably have the same ADBV."

Don't know 'bout that since the two brands typically have bypass valves on opposite ends of the cartridge. I wouldn't be surprised if Motorcrafts use a different ADBV since the componentry at the open end of the filter is very different, including a different base plate, I believe.

I usually drain the oil from my filters before disposal. When I put the toothpick in to bend back the seal on the Pure-One, it tore. I never had that happen before. So I think they might be minimally spec'd (it was for a '93 Honda Civic and only 3K on the OCI).

Ditto. I've done the same thing with MC's.

Perhaps you may be correct. I'm not too famliar with every Motorcraft application and some may be different.

Brian- the Pure1 filter was part #PL14670, the OE size. I went to the FL1A, the oversize.

I changed the oil when it was cold, after it sat all night (about 15 hours)

I did empty the filter after I removed it, almost nothing (a few drops) came out. I set it gasket side up while I did the job, and then turned it over again, nothing, so I shook it, and only got a few drops.

I know Motorcrafts are made by purolator, but FWIW, the Pure1 ADBV is reddish/orange, and the motorcraft is black. Different, who knows other than color. The Pure1 bypass is at the closed end, and the motorcraft was at the opening. I guess that could have something to do with the ADBV material/performance... not really sure.

If I had more time, and somewhere to store a used filter, I probably would have saved to cut up, but I dont, so in the trash it went.

We will see how the motorcraft does.

I use the Pure One PL10193 exclusively on my old Mitsubishi pick-up, just because the ADBV seems to work so well. No start-up noise like I had with most other filters. Mobil 1 filter works fine too on it.

At least for me the Pure One has a good adbv.

Like many Purolator filters, the ADBV centering on the PL14670 varies quite a bit from filter to filter and can be very poor. This is due to the sloppy fit of the ADBV ID to the OD of the flange around the threaded hole in the baseplate. This is easily seen by laying the ADBV over the inside of the baseplate. The ADBV can easily be moved back and forth 1/16 inch or more before its ID hits the outlet hole flange OD. And if the ADBV is assembled off center, the sealing of the valve over and around the inlet holes may be inadequate.

I recently purchased some Pure ONEs at a good sale price and had to search through several PL10241 filters to find just 2 that had good ADBV centering. I also wanted to get a few PL10111 filters, but gave up after finding none with good ADBV centering among the 8+ filters I looked at.

As has already been pointed out, the construction of the FL1A is quite different than the PL14670. Therefore, there could also be differences in the ADBV design and fit.

I have no proof that poorly centered ADBVs lead to oil drain back problems. Nor do I have any proof that well centered ADBVs always work properly. But I’m hoping that the use of filters with well centered ADBVs will minimize oil drain-back issues.
