Dislike Car Dealers? You’ll Love This

I can't believe some here think the dealer is not at fault, are you guys for real?

I mean, dealerships get rimmed on this board for overfilling oil, not tightening oil caps or not putting the oil in, yet if an elderly women is scammed out of $66K, it's OK

I guess all the people that take their cars to the dealer and stuff is messed up on their car, deserve this, since they are not competent enough to do oil changes themselves right?

A criminal can use similar logic as well. Is it really the criminal's fault that people can’t defend themselves or carry a shotgun everywhere they go?

I bet you guys would be singing a different tune if something like this happen to someone in your family.

I wanted to add this (but had to go to the phone)
Quote; "The Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council, which regulates new and used car dealers, took action after she complained. Its investigation found she should have paid about $41,000 for the vehicle — which wasn’t even new.

“In my eight years here, I haven’t seen a case like this,” said Carey Smith, the regulator’s director of investigations. “The deal was way over the top regarding pricing.”

Smith has charged Mazda of Orangeville and two senior employees with breaching Ontario legislation that protects consumers. The dealership could face a fine of up to $250,000 if found guilty."

Unfortunately, there are some "stealers" who love to fleece & rip off people who don't know any better. I actually drove my mom out of state to get a MUCH better deal on her new Matrix (Frankfort, KY, around 90 miles away) because the local dealers wouldn't give her a good deal, wanted to charge her full sticker. And she's "normal" too-unfortunately there's a lot of greedy people out there.

I assume those people who make these statements haven't had to deal with elder care on a personal level. This could have easily happened to my mother. Unlike people under 18, there is no expiration date of having rights as an adult. There is no way to put a stamp on an old person's forehead that says "I'm old, demented, and I can't make rational decisions for myself, and therefore my signature isn't valid on documents." There are a lot of old people out there who shouldn't make financial decisions, but insist on doing so anyhow. They don't realize what they're doing. These things happen way more often than you know. The worst is in the transitional period during the onset of dementia. And the worst vultures are door-to-door salesmen. I can fill a thread with the nightmare of dealing with my mother and her problems.

Thankfully, there are Ontario Provincial officials looking out for this lady, and recognizing what's what. The rest of you guys need to grow up.

+1

A friend of mine is going though this right now...

Addyguy do you drive??? Mazda dealers are the scum of the earth. Both in Canada and the USA.Why after buying two Mazda switched

to Honda.

anyone here who is defending the dealer has no conscience and/or has never sold cars. I sold cars for about 6 months; dealers are dirtbags and deserve all the badmouthing they get. the salesman is actually the least complicit. the sales manager, general manager and F&I manager are the worst. when they go to 'get the numbers', you know what they are doing? figuring out how much they can screw you over. you could see a deal for 250/mo for 48 but by the time you leave the F&I room you're getting 375/60! they all high five each other after a sweet deal, because they all get a cut; the salesman who 'might' feel bad (he was told to get friendly w/ them, 'make the deal') is kept quiet because he gets a cut of the back end money also.
the last straw for me was seeing a grown man cry in the service bay; he traded in a PAID OFF mint RAM 1500 4x4 for a used isuzu rodeo. the rodeo had all sorts of electrical issues and needed like $800 of work. service manager says 'so what? it's not covered'.
dirtbags, all of them (mostly)

I don't see anyone defending the dealer.

I see a lot of folks questioning that she is allowed to manage her own finances.

Just because many think she shouldn't have been allowed to manage her finances does not mean the dealer is worthy of defense.

The lady did not go into the dealership to buy a car. She went in to get service. That is a big difference right there. I don`t know all the details, but I can guess that the salesman used fear tactics about driving an unsafe car to scare her. We had a dealership do this to my mother-in-law to try to get her to purchase all kinds of unnecessary service. Fortunately she just walked out. The lady in Canada was not able to. Taking advantage of someone like that is the same as beating up someone smaller than you and taking their wallet. Wrong is wrong.

+1. The state categorizes her as intellectually disabled. That is it. She isnt in a transitional period or something like that. She has a bona-fide issue and is apparently receiving money from the state as a result of it, vice being a functional member.

All of that is well and good - glad she is being taken care of, that is a good thing. However, the fact that she is categorized in such a way means that she is incompetent to make such decisions. Yet she is independent. Can't help that. Only so many handouts can be given. Not a nanny too...

It sure is a sad situation, and the dealership surely overstepped their bounds. But then again, she does have an issue and should not be funded to be driving around and spending money on stuff if she is not intellectually competent. That $2000/month should be spent on defined items and with care and specificity, not be free to do something with, willy nilly.

Im glad if it goes for sustenance and a roof over her head. I am angry if it is a handout that she can be spending without control or oversight to begin with...

Exactly.

If anyone bothered to read the article, she did her pricing homework AFTER she bought the car. She's just clearly too stupid to do anything, I guess. Take her monthly disability check and toss her in an old folks home. I'm tried of this nanny-statism in Canada where I have to take care of irresponsible people like her. I'll take care of my family, and it should stop there, save for a few very-specific exceptions. I'm tired of losing half my paychecks to someone's social pet-project!

The dealer had to be fully aware of her financial status and the source of her income to finance the deal. This was a bad deal for someone of twice her means.

Whatever the outcome, I hope that they have BIG pictures of the principles involved on the wire for everyone to see. I'd leave all involved subjected to a scorched earth policy.

There's a big world out there, Stick a pin in a map and Go.
I'm sure you'll be very happy.

There are better places than Sudbury ;-)

In my younger days, I was messed over royally by a Ford dealer who failed to properly repair my Ford in their body shop.

After the Ford dealer had my car for a month and were unable to finish the job in a competent manner, it was loaded onto a flatbed and was taken to a body shop that was able to finish the job in a timely manner.

As a parting gift from the Ford dealer, every one of the tires on my car had at least one body trim screw embedded in it. This was a set of tires with less than 1,000 miles on them.

When I contacted Ford with my experience, they told me that their dealers are independent businesses, and politely told me that they simply didn't care.

It's a shame that was the last Ford product that I ever bought.

And we're to believe that Mazda Canada is going to care here? Only if Canada has different laws on this sort of thing.

For those of you who do not see that it is wrong than let us hope that it happens to your parents some day and see if your opinion changes!. Yea, I know, you would never let that happen to them

This and the post directly below it are pretty rude.

This has little to nothing to do with elder law or treating "old" folks, and everything to do with the fact that she was determined to be intellectually challenged, and thus at least somewhat incompetent, dealing with a fairly large amount of public funds.

The lady is 56, hardly old, definitely not elderly. Merely has an intellectual issue. However, that is the point of it.

I do not agree that the dealer was right in charging that much - though charging a full MSRP plus options and whatever financing terms allow for a comfortable payment surely is legal. It was a lousy move on their part, especially once determining that she is on public aid.

But at the end of the day, the thing is that it is still 50% her fault. Intellectually challenged or not, she is an adult, with funds, and signed into an agreement.

The real crime is that the state entrusts a fairly large amount of funds to her each month, and being "challenged", she is incompetent of managing them properly. Now I have no issue with "non-challenged" folks making stupid decisions with their finances and loosing their shirt, why should it be much different here? If she is incompetent and the state still entrusts her with money, one should assume it to be a lost sum.

Right, $1200 or so a month is a "lage" sum of money for someone that needs help and cannot provide for themselves, but lets take it away because they might spend it all. Meanwhile lets bailout auto companies and banks to the tune of trillions, waste money on bogus "green" initiatives and on war, but that's OK.

Sounds like some sales staff need kneecapping.A pity that there is no cousin Vito to visit the dealership.
A thief is a thief.
