I'm curious about why Discount Tire seems to be conducting tests when Tire Rack seems to already have been doing their own testing. Reminder: Discount Tire owns Tire Rack.

DT's testing program is less ambitious, and appears to have sprung more from an internal sales tool, rather than a public marketing tool.
Plus, they still operate as independent companies to a large degree…which is not a bad thing.
If, instead of two family-run indie companies joining togther, it was a PE firm buying the other out, the MBAs would have already stripped out everything that made TR unique and gave it value, squeezed out every bit of possible savings it could, and just kept the brand around to apply to whatever.
That that hasn't happened (yet), two years after the acquisition, is a good thing.
