Hi and TIA. I have a 2003 yukon that needs a new compressor.....so when I started doing a search for parts online I came across this site and they claim to make it better than the factory made parts. I looked into GMCparts direct and found a factory compressor for the same price. What to do? The warranty was good on the discount one.....basically will send you a new for for a year before getting yours back and will pay for shipping both ways.

Check Amazon too. When I needed a new one for my BMW, I quite by chance stumbled on a new Denso compressor (with clutch) for sale by Amazon for $124 - when the cheapest I could find anywhere else was well over $200. Once I bought that one, the price on the website jumped to $228 where it is today. Who knows how or why that happened but I took it and ran.

any aftermarket is going to claim they make it better than factory or oem. i'd be weary of warranty on anything mail order. And generally for ac compressor warranty for it to be honored the repair has to be done by a licensed shop that'll state they performed necessary steps to the AC system prior to installing the new compressor, generally replacing all the parts or flushing parts that can be flushed and flushing all the lines. Otherwise they will think you are someone else left a bad condensor in the system that's plugged up or the system has debris from the old compressor which caused failure on the new one = no warranty.

Don't buy a "Compressorworks" brand lookalike compressor. I had to installed 3 defective ones on a Ford Escort, before the boss ordered something else that worked.

I don't buy rebuilt anything anymore, if its new i would go with OEM otherwise low mileage used. The 03 GMC should be common and cheap, i paid $35 for the last one with about 20K on the unit from an 06 and it has been working well the last 3 years.

A agree with the opinion of not using a rebuilt AC compressor; been there more than enough times to not want to do the same job over and over every few years. Also heed the warranty advice. I essentially forfeit the warranty because I do my own work. Read the warranty info that comes with the compressor carefully.

I 2nd (or is it 3rd?) stay away from rebuilt compressors! They are garbage. We refuse to use them at my shop because of all the combacks. New only. We have used the Compressorworks that Artifficialist doesn't like and never had a bad one. But these are new only. Also as stated you must flush and clean the entire system if it's contaminated, replaceing the condensor is usually mandatory and always a new dryer. No shortcuts in AC repair.

thanks guys,,,just for the record I never considered a rebuilt compressor

I'm a DIY when it comes to AC repair and this is such a true statement. I learned this the hard way.....twice. I think most if not all issues with DIY AC service comes from two or three places: 1) Not enough lubricant in the system. Without a full flush and clean (essentially starting with a "dry" system), you never really know how much lubricant is in there. 2) Undercharging. The system needs enough refrigerant charge to be able to carry the lubricant throughout the system. 3) Use of canned stop leak. This stuff is NO GOOD. Here's a link to a very helpful forum. Just a few minutes of browsing some of the posts will make it very clear if you're attempting something that could get you in over your head in a real hurry. Don't get hung up on who sponsors the Forum. There is very sound advice there. http://www.autoacforum.com/
