I received some information here a few years back on the quality of the Pure 1 oil filter. I then was told by someone, maybe Patman??, about a larger replacement. My car ('02 WRX) takes a stubby but I began using the larger #24458 for the extended drain interval (10K) that RL oil provides. Anyway I went into my local Advanced Auto Parts, couldn't find it on the shelf so I asked the counter girl only to be told that that filter had been discontinued. What gives? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated seeing that I am about to do an RX clean and then begin my GC, LC and FP experiment. I need an alternative/bigger filter for my application. Any ideas or does someone know who has THE BOOK for reference?

That appears to be true. I found this in Baldwin B161-S and it doesn't appear to work in Purolator or Wix (which for Wix is odd)

I too have heard that they are discontuing that filter. (it fits my mitsu). I think this has to do with the fact that our cars/trucks dont really need very big filters. The new tiny ones work fine. However, the one exception is the AutoRx treatment. We have all seen the crud that loads the filters during those treatments. I would just buy some cheap purolator Premium plus 14459 filters and change them often.

I could do that but I am convinced that there is an alternative. If not, then I will switch to another high quality filter. Any suggestions guys?

I just received this note from Purolator.

I am sorry, but the PL24458 has become an obsolete product in the Purolator line. The PL14460 is the only Purolator filter recommended for the 2002 Subaru WRX with the 2.0L turbocharged engine. There is no larger version of that filter in the Purolator product line.

Tom (Filter Hot Line)

My question to him and those that know. Can I substitute with one that is not required yet does have proper fit with increased volume and surface area?

I bought 9 Purolator 24458 oil filters in the last 2 weeks. I know my wife's next car will be a Honda so I decided to stock up on the 24458, before they are all gone. Every Discount Auto Parts were sold out of this filter.
