I've always bought the Powerflo. Should I continue to, or would the Quaker State do me fine? I do 6 month oil changes on both of our vehicles, according to advice researched on this site. My '99 Silverado (4.8l) gets about 2500 km (2000 miles?) every 6 months while our family car, a '97 Lumina(3.1l) gets about 3000 km (2200 miles?) What is the best for my situation?

BigAl...I understand why the clip should be 1/32" shorter. It is a machine process to attach the clip. So the element need to be "centered" when the clip is attached. And they are right with 1/64th" open at each end, the element should settle into the glue in the endcap and cover over the clip easily.
Two things could be the reason why you get what you got. One, is that the clip is out of spec and to short. Or two, the machine that puts the clip on is out of "spec" orientation wise when it puts the clip on.
What happens when the clip doesn't settle into both ends of the end cap is that unfiltered oil, through pressure, will go between the pleats in the area where the clip isn't closing the two ends of the media.
It's not the end of the world but it does reduce the efficiency of the element and allow a % of unfiltered oil downstream all the time. With such a small gap it is a very low %. But not the way desingers intended and it is a manufacturing "flaw" ( imo).

On the QS2287A filters, the clip was consistently 1/4" shorter than the pleats. The ones I had were obviously made wrong. I just bought a case of AC (OEM) filters, so I'm going to forget about using Purolators for a while at least. The car is under warranty. Now I don't have to worry about the filter manufacturer getting into a dispute with the car manufacturer if there is a problem.
Rocketman: I think the 3.1 engine takes the same filter I found problems with, but maybe I just got a couple of bad ones. Your engine, your call.

The conversion factor for kilometers to miles is 0.6, so 2,500 km would calculate to 1,500 miles, and 3,000 km would calculate to 1,800 miles. You're definitely an "early changer", but given Canada's brutal winters, that's probably not a bad thing.
I realize that I am an "early" changer when it comes to mileage, but with using dino I feel better changing the oil & filter after 6 months regardless of what's on the odometer. The vehicles don't get a whole lot of mileage on them, my wife can walk to work while I ride my bike to work alot in the spring, summer and fall. In addition, alot of the mileage is "short trip" mileage. Six month OCI's for me I think are worth it. I hope the "new" Quaker State (Purolator) oil filters serve me well. Do they resemble the Premium Plus or another type of Purolator?
I already sent them back to Arvin Meritor. I opened one of the replacements they sent me and it was the same, so it seems to be the way they are. I gave away the rest to a coworker. His daughter drives an old beater Cavalier. He was happy to get them.
They have the same efficiency as the Premium Plus, and very similar construction. Some models have less media area, but with short oil change intervals that shouldn't be a big issue. If you are looking for a good, cheap filter, why not use a Supertech?

Thanks for the suggestion, however I can't get Supertech filters at Walmart here in Canada. I would have to go "over the river" to Niagara Falls NY. Not to far, but a pain in the ***. With tolls, exchange, time, to me just not worth it; unless I was over there for some other reason. Walmart here carries only Fram. It seems that the $6.99 Quaker State is the best bang for the $

I agree. For the price of a McDonalds happy meal you can have a high quality OEM filter. Like I said, I just picked up a case of PF47s for less than $3 (US) each with shipping on eBay.quote:
