I wouldn't disable the lock-up unless you want to see a small hit in MPG with a big hit on cooling as there's more heat being dumped into the fluid which also means more heat for the cooling system to deal with. Start with the small things first - engine tune, fresh fluid(as much as I don't like MaxLife in some applications, a old Ford won't quip about thin fluid), and tranny filter in good shape.
