My carpeting is khaki colored (is that a color?) and I have 2 Mastiffs, very cute but big. I live in the woods and while they do not come in from a mud puddle, they do seem to get my carpet dirty. And toss in the occasional buried bone they bring in without me seeing and carpet gets dirty quickly. I do have Bridgepoint carpet cleaning chemicals I use with a Bissell Carpet Cleaner. I vacuum at least once a week with a beater bar vacuum.

And before anyone suggests they dogs stay.

Never in the bed, but often on the bed, at least the smaller Mastiff.

Here's the secret. Vacuum first so pet hair won't get lodged in the carpet cleaning machine. Then, go buy yourself a pump up sprayer for weeds and such, only use it to pre spray your carpet with cleaning solution. Then, map out your carpet like a professional would do. Clean the carpet from the exterior areas and work towards an exit point. Pre spray small areas with cleaning solution, and rinse it out with nothing but water with your carpet cleaning machine. And dry stroke (let the machine suck up as much water after you've rinsed). it's not rocket science. It's hard work, but you'll get crystal clean carpet!

Are these the steps you are recommending ? Thanks.

1)Pre-spray carpet with cleaning solution, let it soaks for 10-15 minutes.
2)Clean it out with water with carpet cleaning machine.
3)Rinse it out with water again with carpet cleaning machine.
4)Suck up as much water as possible after rinsed.
5)Open all windows and have fans running at high speed for faster drying.

I keep my carpets clean by having wooden and concrete floors (tiles are too flash!)

No but seriously - dogs will do that.

Can't stand giving dogs a bath myself.

As Drew said, you can get really clean this way, but you'll need to really work hard to do it!

pre vacuuming the dry soil out first is an excellent tip. Once you get it wet it's a LOT harder to remove. And HEAT is another secret. Boil some water if needed, as a bit of heat adds dramatically to the effectiveness.

Note that in many carpets it is necessary to REPEAT the sequence in heavily soiled areas. A good operator can always compensate for the machinery being a little weak if he's willing to work hard.

I do that exact thing. Vacuum first with beater bar vacuum. No carpet cleaner solution. Spray with a garden sprayer Bridgepoint pretreat. Wait a bit, then clean with Bridgepoint rinse chemical. Or plain water. I use as hot a water as comes from my tap into the machine and the Bissell has heat also.

I had a good Hoover, but it left too much water. While Consumer Reports rated the Hoover pretty high, The Good Housekeeping rating included how much dirty water got extracted and the Bissell was better. (I agree).

However doing all of the above still does not give me a nice clean carpet.

You have simply reached the point where a qualified professional carpet cleaner is needed.

The whole problem with ANY machine that uses a small 110v plug is that it can never have the huge positive displacement blower that almost any truck mounted cleaner will have.

Usually when we work for a DIY cleaner their carpets are full of residues from the over application of cleaners and the under removal of them by inferior technique and equipment. I have done many of their homes twice, once to clean it and another to rinse out the residues and old dirt that was way down in the rug and wicked up as it dried.

Yup. Just did my parents carpet that way with an old beater Hoover carpet cleaning machine and it came out wonderful. You don't need step 3 though and you don't really need to let the prespray cleaning solution sit in the carpet that long. Your goal is to leave the carpet "wet" for as short a time period as possible and to not over saturate it to the point water and or prespray gets into the padding underneath, because, like Steve indicated, professional guys use machines that have as much as 40 or 50 hp gasoline engines. They can suck the water out of the pad. So you map out small areas, prespray a small quadrant, then use the carpet cleaning machine to rinse it out. Use slow passes and after you've made a line of rinse passes, make 2 dry stroke passes to suck out as much water as possible. And when you fill the machine, fill it with hot tap water. If you boil the water, you could melt parts in the machine. Using this technique, areas you clean will be dry in an hour. It might take all day and you'll be sweating cause it's hard work, but it works brilliantly. In fact, most new machines apply cleaning solution and rinse it with clean water on each pass. Some of them have heaters as well to keep the rinse water and cleaning solution hot. If you've used your cleaning machine several times previously and haven't rinsed out the solution, you don't even have to prespray because so much soap is already built up in the carpet. When I used to clean carpet professionally, I could always tell when carpets had been cleaned with a small personal cleaning machine because the carpet had so much soap built up in it. That makes it sticky, it attracts dirt, and it gets dirtier faster. the goal is to clean out all the dirt and leave behind no soap or cleaning solution.

How old is the carpet? Old carpet can be clean, but it can look crummy if the carpet fibers are all beat to heck, especially in high traffic areas. Does your cleaning machine have rotary bristles?

Thanks Drew.

I actually don't have a cleaning machine, I borrowed my friend an old beater Hoover carpet cleaner. My carpet is more than 20-25 years old, I cleaned it last month it looks somewhat cleaner than before but not as nice as I like.

I copied your posts and make a hard copy to follow your instructions on the next cleaning job.
