direct fuel injection VS regular fuel injection

whats the difference between these 2 fuel delivery systems. i have an '07 mazdaspeed and its the first time ive heard of this direct injection setup. the selling point of this system was that it give better fuel economy. what are the differences between the 2 injectors and how long has this system been around?
 
It's been around a long time in diesel engines. I think the first use of it in a production gasoline engine car was by Mercedes. The Gullwing 300SL introduced in the mid 50s had an inline six with direct mechanical fuel injection.

On a typical modern FI gasoline engine the injectors are located at the end of each intake runner right where the manifold bolts to the head. The fuel is injected into the stream of of air being pulled in by the piston on the intake stroke. On a DI engine, the injectors screw into the head and inject the fuel directly into the combustion chamber.
 
DI gasoline engines have been around for some years. I know Isuzu offered a DI'd version of their 3.5L V6 in the 2004 Rodeo and Axiom. Those came out in 2003. The fuel injectors are tied into the cylinder head as opposed to being plumbed into the intake manifold. I know on the 3.5L, DI eliminated the need for EGR, increased fuel economy and allowed for a super low and smooth idle RPM. These systems probably use a nice pricey fuel delivery system.

Just did a little research and I was right about the 300SL. Here is a picture of the engine. Note the very "diesel looking" fuel pump and the injectors screwed into the heads (actually the block at the top of each cylinder).

Good Gawd that is one beautiful piece of iron!! Look at the size of that harmonic balancer deal, or the gear/shaft driven fuel pump. Nice find G-Man.

Just a note about the odd placement of those injectors. I believe the combustion chamber on this engine is actually in the cylinder not in the head. Note the angle of the head on the block relative to the axis of the cylinder bores.
