Dino vs grp III,same oil company,differences?

What`s the exact differences between an oil co`s dino and their grp III? For example,Pennzoil conventional vs Platinum,Valvoline conventional vs Synpower,etc. Is it the same ingredients but the difference being the grp III having the purified base stock?
 
If you look at VOA's there are often other differences beyond the base stock. Compare TBN. Or, per Mobil website Mobil 7500 has 16% more detergent that 5000.

So, depends.

Group III goes a little beyond purifying.

Purifying means you are filtering out all the junk to get what you want. That's group I and II. Group III means hydrocracked, which is a step further: you're not just filtering stuff out, you're actually breaking it down chemically to get what you want.

That's why the most recent iterations of group III are being called synthetic: whereas group IV and V are built up from small molecules, group III is broken down from large ones. Big difference from groups I and II, which are taken from crude oil and just used as they are.
 
From wear standpoint in late 90s NY taxi cabs Consumer Reports said the test they performed on 85 cabs showed no difference in wear re. syn or dino also no difference in 3 mo. or 6mo. oci. I know the cabs ran without lots of start ups and this and that but I think they were right imho.Marketering is the big difference.

Groups I and II are not simply filtered crude oil. They undergo numerous processes including vacuum distillation, dewaxing, and hydrotreating. The key difference between Groups I, II, and III is the degree and severity of hydrotreating/cracking, and sometimes dewaxing methods.

No 12 month OCI? Lots of Synthetics claim a possible 1 year oci. But you're definitely right that short term protection isn't much of a difference

Additive solubility and lubricity yes, both to varying degrees depending on the amount of polarity in a specific Group III. Antiwear is dominated by additives and any slight differences among hydrocarbon base oils are likely not measurable.
