Hey all,

I've noticed on my Ram that the oil temp stays around 200-220 degrees. Some that tow have said they see temps of 250 degrees.

What are the limits of conventional oil temp/longevity wise? If one uses conventional oil and goes by the OLM that may go 10k, could there be issues?
This makes me nervous and part of the reason for me going to Pennzoil platinum.

Is this normal for engine oils to run at these temps and I'm just paranoid since I can see the temp now?

I'm not familiar with your truck but that sounds like normal temp. for most cars.

It would be a bad mistake from the engineers if using the specified oil and OLM caused problems.

Oil temps almost always run hotter than coolant temps. 220 is nothing to be concerned about.
With that being said, if youve got MDS and VVT (all Hemis do) 5w20 is highly recommended, and I wouldn't run anything other than synthetic in that grade.

My 5.7 HEMI in my Jeep Grand Cherokee runs oil temps around the same. Just driving around town will see it go above the boiling point, (205F- 218F). The vehicle is brand new, and I haven't had it on any long highway excursions yet, so I can't say how high it will actually go. I'm figuring it might drop a couple of degrees once it gets broken in.

You should use Pennzoil Platinum (5W-20) only, because it is one of just a few oils that meet the Chrysler spec. for that engine. I've read using any other type and or weight oil could cause problems with the MDS System, (Multiple Displacement System). I'm not a big fan of thin oils, especially out here in the desert southwest where Summertime temperatures can get above 115F in June and July. But I'm betting the engineers know more than I do.

Sounds like a normal temp range to me. Back in the 80s-90s my Camaro road race car with a small block used to see 240 water and 300 oil on a hot day. We ran Kendall GT1 20w50 conventional and everything held up fine in 50 mile races. We considered anything below 270 oil as normal.

I dont think you'll have issues with coking in this engine.

Assuming the recommended viscosity is 5w20, does it say you can go up a grade if towing?

How is that new truck for doing oil changes ? Can you get to filter and drain plug with ease ?
I have been eyeballing the new Hemi 4x4 1/2 tons .

The oil temperature might be a bit different.

We RAM owners get a ATF, oil, coolant, tire pressure, oil PSI, and a bunch of other neat data points on the newer RAM on the Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) display. It is an awesome tool.

I doubt the average oil temperature in the 5.7 HEMI stresses PCMO's unless towing. To provide an reference the ASTM D5800 for NOACK is 482°F or so I have read.

I was under there the other day when me and a buddy put on my step bars. The drain plug is easy to get to. The oil filter doesn't look bad either.

I just checked the manual, it doesn't say anything about towing and oil grades. But I assume the OLM will go off sooner because of it.

Ah, then I would imagine a stout dino like Pennzoil conventional would have no issues doing the 10k. Will be a breeze for platinum.
