I post on Saabnet but I have yet to read someone post about V6 sludge problems and I seriously doubt everyone there uses syn's with 3-5k changes.

No, there is no epidemic of V-6 sludge problems. That was the 4 cyl, yes. But you're still dealing with a turbo car. As for your "doubts," you'd be surprised. And I said nothing about 3k oil changes. But hey, your car, do what you want.

My point is turbocharged doesn't automatically mean manditory use of a syn oil.

Dinos are good enough,especially nowadays.

I run the ocassional super short run of a dino HDEO. But I can't see running it long term. I understand your point and I'm just trying to provide you with my perspective from dealing w/ these cars all the time. As for the "band-aid synth," no, SAAB realized it no longer needed to be recommending anything but Full Synthetic in its car if it wanted them to be able to run any decent oil change interval.

If our Dino's were Group I based, I'd say pretty well use synthetics for sure. Although, I think one could use the heavier grade Group I oils like 15w40 and keep them to 3K miles or less, and do ok in a turbo engine.

An interesting article on Group II base oils and hydrocracking presented by Chevron during the 2007 Croatian Society for Fuels and Lubricants Symposium (for those that haven't run into this article yet

). If you scroll down halfway, the second half of the article is in English.

(Motor oils made with Chevron's commercial 95-105 VI base oil made by combined hydrocracking, ISODEWAXING process, and hydrofinishing can have oxidation stabilities comparable to that of motor oils made with PAO.)

Modern SM oils made with Group II/II+ base oils are much better than the old Group I oils from a thermal/oxidative POV. These conventional don't get the premium add-pacs and generally higher TBN that synthetics get, but for shorter intervals they provide a very high level of performance and protection.

I would generally have no problem running these SM Group II/II+ based oils for 4-5K mile oil intervals in a turbo application. I think one of the biggest factors in turbo applications that helps maintain the oil is keeping the oil level topped up. Especially if the engine has a relatively small oil sump (like some VW 1.8T's).

I think there still is a lot of left over fear and paranioa from the only oil cooled turbo days(80's).

I know i'm not the only one who knows better!
