dino + mmo vs synthetic

A thought occurred to me yesterday.

If one uses synthetic oils primarily for the improved additive packages and changes oil at 5,000 mile intervals, which is a preferred approach

name brand dino + marvel mystery oil

vs

name brand synthetic

If it makes any difference, lets talk about 5W30 with CA temperature ranges.

Well, a jug of clean5000 and a quart of MM cost the same as M1. One of these has a long history of performance. The other is a mystery.

Why do you think adding solvent to conventional oil would compare at all to using a synthetic oil?

If you use a good synt in a clean engine to start with it will never need cleaners like MMO, Auto RX or what ever. 5000 miles is a good start for a qualiy synt. Go 10,000.

I read on another portion of this forum how many people swear by mmo, so I assumed the reaction wouldn't be hostile

Perhaps if you had posted it on the oil additives board where MMO is discussed regularly, the response might have been better.

To be honest, I don't think your question is that whacked. I'm sure others have wondered if a good quality synthetic like PP would clean just as well (or better) as MMO added to dino.

If I added MMO in my oil, I would feel better about adding it to dino then to a synthetic. But, that's just my

Yeah,I wouldnt use any additives with Synthetic either.

MMO is useful in the crankcase in very cold weather, which is NOT your situation.
It is also helpful for internal cleaning - even if you are spotless under the valve cover, MMO can help clean the piston ring area.
But I would not use MMO all the time in the crankcase. You CAN with no ill effects - many do and is of course recommended in their website. Once or twice a year is safe and almost assuredly going to have cleaning benefits.

BTW, MMO is not only a cleaner, buy a good lube. And I use MMO 4 ounces/10 gallons of fuel in the gas every time. All sorts of benefits.

Dont people add mmo to their crank case purely for the detergent factor. I cant imagine that adding MMO would improve any aspect of a conventional oil(of the proper weight) except detergent factor.

no reason for additives unless you have a specific need.

most evidence in their favor is anecdotal anyway.

The reason is as an UCL - almost as if not as important as using it for cleaning. Since most engine wear occours at start-up, adding any extra protection at all is only logical.

Yes, it's a 'Mystery' but with over 80-years on the market - and not one single filed complaint reguarding it causing engine damage, that kinda says something about it.

Dino + MMO vs Synthetic?

Why not MMO + Synthetic - best of both worlds!

Especially with this E-10 gasoline, I can think of no reason not to use it in fuel and oil both!

You won't get any UCL effect from MMO in the crankcase, unless you have bad valve stem seals.

I'd rather use a good synthetic, or a conventional with some Auto RX. I have no plans to ever dilute my oil with MMO again.

If you are looking for thin your dino for cold temps without being be concerned with MMO's possible lack of protection, why not replace one of the OC qts with a thinner grade dino or even a synthetic?
