Did you get the part of his post where he does not want to spend alot of $$.

This is for posting photos on a web site.

for about $180, iuf you think it's ok, you can find a KonicaMinolta Dimage Z-10, which has 3.2 MP, a 8X optical zoom, great pic quality, and great functions and features, of which I still haven't "explored" the majority. it's cheap 'cause it's an older model, but I'm very happy with it so far...I got it for $189 from Newegg on a special sale...

Have recently purchased a Canon A540 for $179.00 from Circuit City. Bought it on a good review. But right now I forgot where I saw the review. They were inpressed with the sharpness of the pics in low lights. They noted that the backround subjects did not disappear in flash pics. FWIW
 
Papa Bear, one can not buy too many pixels. I've seen some of your products and it is very hard to express the qualities of textiles, especially with the dig. cams. They may appear as definitive to you since you are already familiar with the materials, buts it would be less than all for an onlooker. Even they would be reduced to a similar size at the end, the definition will be better with the high-pixel ones.

I had shoot lots of textile products for living and the 4mp was called as the studio cam back then. Now, no less than 80mp.s. Just to give idea where this is going.

Since you use a software like Photoshop RAW image compatibility would be nice. Just try it, load the frames as RAW to the photoshp. Canon's 530 to 640 give this, not sure for every cam. Also provisions for direct connection to the computer would also be nice, seeing what you shoot full screen may deter many cable traffic. Also with ability to take picture with one keystroke one can try every logical setting speedly to find the best of all.
 
I don't think you guys have mentioned Casio, Kodac or Samsung cameras ??
The Canon A530 is on sale here for $199 Canadian.

O.K. Here is a short list, please put them in order as your first to last choice. (prices in $ Can.)

Canon A530 5 meg... $199
HP E327 5 meg........ $100
HP M420 5 meg........ $100
Casio exilim 6 meg......$169

Would you jump on any of those, or are there better values out there ??

Beware of the bottom end of the market. Look at some camera review sites to find out if it's any good. For instance, the cheapest Olympus isn't a very good camera even though most Olympus cameras are very good compared to their competition.

One I saw ,more than a year ago, was a "fujifilm" with some ~100mm dia. lens (looking bigger than of the medium format cams). Hasselblad has 39mp on 48mm format but has the provisions for changing just the ccd for a future plan.

Well sorry that I digresss, my point was that 4mp was a studio cam and this wasn't a decade ago. I just humbly suggest not to ignore those "mp"s completely.

Read just enough to get started then go take a bunch of pictures before you seriously dive into the manual. The manual will make much more sense when you have some familiarity with the camera.

Spent a multitude of minutes researching digital cameras last summer. An inordinant amount of time. Walked away pert near as confused as when I began.

However, after reading a voluminous amount of postings in various message boards and reading reviews at legitimate Web sites.......

Do not be stingy. Don't need to spend a huge amount but skimping now can cause aggrevation later.

It appear that $250 to $350 or so is the sweet zone for many people.

5 or 6 mega pixels will satisfy even picky people.

Optical zoom is mucho better than that so-called "electronic zoom" stuff. Get some zoom, you WILL be glad you did. I opted for 12X and was very glad I did.

Read an earlier post about the Canon S2 IS. That's the one I bought. Takes extremely nics pics!!!!!

The S3 is the latest model but the S2 is still available and saw some for sale at $250, an excellent price. Just make sure you buy new and not refurbished.

Not saying this camera is the epitomie of digital pic taking. Other makes/models may suit your purposes better. But, it's worth taking a peek at.

That's very similar to what we bought for my brother last year. It was A520 (back then), 530 should come with some improvements. I tried to 'cheat' him for an Olympus UZ-770 but he insisted on Canon for its practicality.

Here is how it can capture colors under a 25watts tungsten bulb. Very little color correction towards the warm! Just be careful for stability with this machine and it can take many great photos I may say.

Anyways... Santa should know

I bought the A520 for my sister for X-mas last year. Nice little camera for a regular point-and-shooter, plus has some manual controls as well. The built-in flash has a very limited range, but you can always use an external one if necessary.

Picture quality is good, but not any better than my 5-year-old Canon A20, just more megapixels.
 
Congrats on your nice new camera, Papa Bear! I just skimmed the review at stevesdigicams- looks like a great little all-around camera, and you've already ordered the most important accessory you can have- a memory card with some serious capacity. Great price too.

I'll agree with the above that says to skim the manual a little, but then go forth & shoot lots of pictures. I'm kinda jealous- much spiffier than my Fuji, which is beginning to show its age.
