Digital camera memory card

Hi. I have a Canon Powershot A620 digital camera that came with a 32mb card (small actually) and a 256mb card that I use all the time. But I see now that that there are 1, 2, and 4 gb cards available. Would they work ok in my camera?
Any reason I couldn't use it?
Would picture quality be any different?
On a trip a big memory would be handy for holding lots of pics.

They should work just fine, picture quality has zero to do with card capacity.

Go to Cannon's website or Stevesdigicams. Cameras have a limit on how much memory they can address. 4gb would be iffy. What happened to your owners manual?

There would be no difference in picture quality.

Thats the camera I have and its been a great camera!

I have 512meg, 1gig and 2 gig cards. All are the normal cards (no 32x this or gold that) and all they do is hold data.

There will be only one difference, how many photos that it holds. Everything else is the same.

Wal-Mart has some excellent 1gig cards for under $15. 2 of those will cover any trip with the camera at the largest file size (large - superfine)

The 2 gig works well, I'd rather not have all my eggs (photos) in one basket in case of a problem or losing the card...

Never tried a 4 gig due to cost.

There might be a performance difference when taking movies with it. I haven;t run into that problem with may camera though and I'm using $16 2GB cards. 4 GB may be an issue if the camera can't address all the memory.

I believe most of them use FAT32 memory format which IIRC is limited to 2 GB in a simple system like camera memory.

I have the Canon S2IS and use a 2GB 60X card. I think 2GB is the limit with these cameras according to an email from Canon. The faster speed cards definitely write the picture faster, but it is only an issue for video or very rapid picture taking.

I have heard there is some kind of basterdized 4GB card that will work in some 2GB cameras but inof on it is spotty.

Like someone else said though, beyond about 2GB I would feel like I had too many eggs in one basket. That's probably an illogical feeling since the risk of damaging a card is highest when handling it. I really like the availability of $16 2GB cards.

The 4GB card may work, but it will only use 2GB of it. As for having all your eggs in one basket, I agree to an extent. If you download the pictures right away they are no less reliable than a small card. All are prone to failure and loss, just like your data on your PC, but it is nice to just be able to snap away and not have to worry about running out of space. I just bought a 2GB card for less than $20, they are so cheap now, so why not buy the biggest you can get?

I have a 2 gig card in my Rebel and I don't come close to using all that capacity even though I save RAW an high quality JPG-s at the same time. I think a card that would hold 300 or so pictures would be a good choice. It will probably be a 1 gig card for Canon Powershot A620.
