So, I've been lurking here for a few years and reading up on the thick vs. thin debate and I had a thought (unusual for me...I almost didn't recognize it.)

What if the reason for different specs is oil temps? I mean, people always point out that the Honda S2000 specs a 30 wt, while most other Honda 4cyl engines spec a 20 wt. What if the proper viscosity for ALL Honda 4 bangers is 20wt, but given the higher power output from the smaller engine, the engineers planned for higher temps and therefore the 30wt in an S2000 is actually the same thickness as the 20wt in a Civic at operating temp?

Same idea with the Ford guys and the Mustang 5w-20 vs. the high performance models which spec a 40 weight. High power and/or track time means higher temps, which mean oil thins more. Is it possible that a Shelby Mustang typically runs higher oil temps than a stock GT?

Applying the same logic to trucks - 5w-20 unless you tow a heavy trailer, then 5w-30. Trailer = higher oil temp = more oil thinning.

Am I making sense? Severe service requires heavier oil, but maybe not for the reasons we assume. Maybe the oil thickness required remains the same, but you just need a thicker oil to get the required thin-ness.

Just a thought, and I am no expert, but that was what I thought about the other night when the power went out and I was alone in the house.

you were thinking about a thick vs. thin oil discussion when you were alone, in the dark, during a power outage. and this is your first post. you'll fit in well here.after all, you are an alien.
on earth, we would think about when the power is coming back on, or the beer will be getting warm in 2.736 hours.
i felt bad that there were 115 views of your post, and 0 replies.anyway, have a good night, and i hope that you're enjoying earth.

Your right it's largely related to oil temp's.

Next question?

would it be related to bulk oil temps or localized oil temps, like at the turbo?

I routinely see 195f oil temps during daily driving. But, if I do some WOT down the straight away of the track the oil temps only go up maybe 10 degrees after going from 30mph to 145mph.....I wonder what kind of temps the oil is getting to at the turbo before draining back to the pan, mixing with the rest of the oil, going thru the pump, thru the oil filter/heat exchanger, and then being read by the sensor I have mounted.

I agree with your thoughts Alienbug. I've discussed this on another forum devoted to the brand of minivan that I drive. Oil weight depends to some degree on the mode of use(and consequently operating oil temp)of the vehicle. 20 weight oil is fine for my mode of driving, which is mostly short trip, never towing anything, flat terrain, and generally grandpa-type driving. For someone using this same van as a tow vehicle, with a full load, in very hilly terrain, 30 weight(or possibly higher)oil would be better.

I think about the Oil in my Car when im on Lunch break, and pretty much all other times of day as well.

After all.. Right Oil and Pressure = Engine Life, or Not.

I guess I can stop taking the pills the doctor gave me because I thought something was wrong with thinking about oil this much!

Just useless posts that have only one reason;

To bump up members post counts....

'Bug, got any UOAs of M1 ESP 5w30 in your TDI?

I don't, Bob, but I do appreciate your thoughtful analysis on Fred's page. Just finishing my 1st run of ESP now, maybe an analysis after the 2nd, but I only do about 11k a year, so that's a ways off.

Yeah, I'm a bit of an oil nerd

I might try M1 ESP 5w30 for my next oil after M1 0w40. Or Redline 0w40. Or GC. Or RP 0w40.

This next UOA will be my first with double-the-output on the engine.
