im brand new to this form. My question is...I notice many oils now being offered in 5 quart jugs, and at walmart for example, Mobil 1 is avaliable in a 5 quart jug (many others are too) I notice a walmart logo is on the jug, its part of the label not a sticker. so what i want to know is...is the oil Im buying at a place like walmart lower quality than if i bought it at a true petroleum type store?

I doubt it's any different, but the 5 qt package may be proprietory to wal-mart.
Look on the back. It should say meets or exceeds ILSAC GF-4 and API SM requirements, new car warranties, blah, blah, blah...so it should be just fine.

i agree, but i know many many things are offered at box stores/discount stores with the same model number etc yet they are not the same product offered at dealer type retailers. welders, water heaters, appliances, and lawn mowers are a few examples i know of for sure.

I emailed Valvoline recently and they told me Walmart pays different oil companies to make the special 5 quart jugs for them of the oils that will sell the best.

Anyone ever buy the 5+ quart jugs from Autozone? I bet they`re a pita to measure off to fill a car with a 4.5 quart capacity.

yes same stuff but wen you buy at auto zone aap napa its 5.5 qts y is that

same stuff as in oil? i know its not same on other stuff, proof...go look at a lincoln welder at a home depot, the serial number will have a "hd" in the serial number, the one at a welding shop will have a normal lincoln serial number. just because it "looks the same on the outside, does not mean its the same on the inside'

Walmart is a huge retailer. They can demand volume discounts from oil companies because they will sell a lot of it. They can afford to make less profit on oil than a auto parts store can also.

Mobil 1 in a 5 quart jugs at Walmart is actually Mobil Clean 7500 semi-synthetic, that why they sell it for less than auto parts stores.

The same for all 5 quart jug oils from other companies sold by Walmart, they are lesser quality than standard oil at other stores.

Joking !!!

the outside of the jug has hash marks incremented into quarts to make it easier.

IMO, Wal-Mart doesn't have a reputation to worry about since the falsely marked made in USA chinese stuff some years ago, but you're right - likely the oil companies would care.

ernied, with all do respect, im not saying oil companies would do that, but if you think companies in general wouldnt do that to protect their reputations, you must not watch tv or realize what walmart and other discount stores manage to pull off with companies to "drive prices down". im just asking a question about oil and i only used mobil for an example. nearly all the 5 quart jugs at walmart have their logo on them and even say something about returning your used oil to walmart for recycling. it is more than possible that walmart is getting a sub par product in a like package, they are very known to do so. doitmyself is giving a specific example in his reply. i worked selling outdoor poer equipment for years, we once recieved a few troy-bilt pushmowers meant to go to lowes (when they first started selling them), the mowers had a lowes sticker on them, a couple days later our rep personally came and picked up the mowers meant for lowes and gave us our correct mowers and appologized saying that the mowers meant for lowes were a lesser grade than those sold to dealers. i later went to lowes to see for myself, and you could visually see differences if you knew what to look for. so oh yes discount stores most definately do in some cases get a lower quality product. and i want to know if thats the case with oil? so far ive seen a reply with a link to the Mobil 1 sight asnering that question, and im sure mobil or any other company would not say yes we give a sub par product to certain retailers. i want to know if anyone has any experience, seen a test, something to that nature?

There is no proof what-so-ever that anything at Walmart is lesser quality than the same product sold somewhere else. Walmart sells for less because they can get them for less with the sheer volume they buy. And because of the high volume they sell they can make money with lower profit margin.

There are many used oil analysis (Used Oil Analysis) on this site and never once an UOA came back with lesser quality for oil purchased at Walmart.
