REcently on a trip to WalMart to pickup ATF for my mom's '03 Altima I noticed Castrol Multivehicle ATF which explicitly stated on the back of the bottle that it can be used amongst others in Nissan applications calling for Matid-D and Matic-J. Yet still I chose Mobil 1 lured by it low pour point -55F or -48C. I then logged onto www.mobilusa.com to find out that the only synthetic ATF offered is Mobil 1 multivehicle fluid, the canadian website shows "Mobil 1 synthetic ATF" same bottle and almost same label on the picture, checked the physical properties and they were the same i.e. pour point viscosity, viscosity index, the Brookfield test and all that. The canadian ATF is only bottled in Canada but blended in the US, so what gives???

Can anyone please shed some light I am totally bamboozzeled all I really want I guess is a Matic-D equivalent in synthetic flavour (the low pour point especially in winter)
Would canadian and US ATFs be the same??

If you're lucky enough even in a wooden church a brick will land on your head

D-matic is nothing special. Any DexronIII fluid can be used.

Your link doesn't work.

I wouldn't worry about the Mobil1. All of their full synthetic ATFs worked excellent over the years as the specs changed. Don't confuse the synthetic Mobil-"1" ATF with the mineral or blend Mobil ATFs. I also wouldn't worry about country specific marketing or labelling.

UnDummy,
The two links you included are the ones I tried to paste into my post but for whatever reason it did not happen, to me it looks like they are both prctically the same. It seems that the same product gets different label maybe because ours has to have french description and and they need to keep it short.
I e-mailed Mobil with my question but so far in 7 days they have not graced me with their answer.

They are claiming DEXRON-III approval therefore somewhere on the packaging there should be a license number. Each license is formulation specific so if the number on the package is the same then the fluid should be the same. I would suggest that if you think it isn't you should report that to GM. They are supposed to track that sort of thing.

On unDummy recommendations, I switched to MerconV on my maxima, my ________ there is world of difference between DexronIII and MerconV. The car loves it and the problems it has resolved are as follows.

1) 1->2 gear banging
2) 2->1 downshifting less harsh
3) shifter moves smoothly (I even though something was wrong with my mounts and started getting quotes, no longer the mounts issue)
4) Cold shifts has been phenominal.
5) Transmission runs less hot
6) Very smooth upshifting and downshifting (except for 2->1).

I must say any MerconV which is been dual rated with DexronIII would make the transmission a lot happier. The last time I checked Mobil1, Castrol and Chevron MerconV are dual speced to DexronIII.

Good luck, unDummy is the MAN!!!

They are very concise on specifications with Mobil 1 ATF Mercon is barely mentioned and does not specify Mercon V only that it may be used in "1988 or later Fords where typpe CJ or H is required. Also recommended for all cars and trucks specyfying Mercon".
The US version can be used in Chrysler trnsmissions whereas the canadian speciffically recommends against it.
Given the latest spiel with ExxonMobil supposedly going to group III vague product description and customer service plainly ignoring the general public I will stop using their products, not that it matters to anyone but me, but I will stick with Catrol products.
No more M1 for me, I don't want to get vulgar here so this post ends here. And the 7 litres of their vaguely described ATF goes back to WalMart in exchange for Castrol Multivechicle ATF.
