Is there an advantage to a long vs short filter? Does the long actually filter more? I have a 2001gmc Sierra 1500 Z71 with the 5.3 engine. I always get the Wix 51522 but the 51040 fits it also which is half as long. I seen this with every filter brand for my truck.

Bigger is better though maybe not necessary. Oil filters were down sized when lead was removed from the Gasoline.

Another ? If you was to buy a oil filter from Walmart what would it be? Are the Supertech good for 3,000 mile oil change?

I've used a few of the SuperTech oil filters on my sisters Camry without any weird startup noise or issues. Her car had 208K on it the last time I checked.

The old SuperTech filters were decent. I know nothing about the reincarnated ones. If you're asking about your Sierra, I'm a big believer in OEM filters, so in your case that would be AC Delco. My question to you is why are you using Extended Mileage oil and changing it at 3,000 miles?

I just always change my oil at 3000 miles. Always have since I bought the truck new. It has 219,000 miles on it now. I'm going to Valvoline Maxlife 10-40 on the next change to try reduce some oil consumption.

Before I came to BITOG I used cheap oil and filters and drove my first '88 528e to 350 K miles on 3 K oil changes. Turns out, I probably could have done the same with with a 6k OCI. You can just about use anything these days for as long as you want. Which ad campaign has grabbed you?

Sometimes over sized filters are better but sometimes the longer the filter the more chance it will be damaged by road debris.. I would use what the engine manufacturer recommends..

What do you think is causing the consumption? If you have changed the oil at 3000 miles since new and it is using oil now to the point that you're wondering about consumption, I wonder what it is. My old Accord uses almost no oil between OCI and I go a lot longer than 3000 miles on an OCI.

I'm not sure. It's used oil pretty much since new. Used half qt at every oil change till over like 150,000 miles and it's just been getting worse from there. A guy here on the forum had me clean it internally with kreen and change pcv valve and make sure hose was good. It did help the cold start upknock it's had since 20,000 miles. It also seemed to help performance but not on the oil consumption.

3000 Mile OCI is an old myth from way back

perfect

Oil consumption in your vehicle is probably related to improper break-in. Ring seal and cylinder honing were reduced with synthetic oil and high frequency oil changes. I bet if a boroscope were entered into your combustion chamber the hatch marks would look like new.

So with valvoline maxlife how often should I change the oil? I put a Wix filter on it. I hope the little thicker oil at least reduces the consumption. It really bums me out that this thing uses oil. It literally had 1 mile on it when I bought it. I've kept it up perfect and couldn't have done it any better.

If my car/truk used 2qts every 3000 miles I would just change the oil filter every 10k miles. You ARE changing the oil every time you add oil, the TBN would be almost like new oil.

I always found the rate of oil use went up as the oil got dirty.

So for the first 2,000 miles, there would be no discernable use. The next 2,000 miles might result in 1 quart of use. A whole quart would then burn in the last 1,000 miles.

The pattern of use seemed to not be linear at all.

Haven't owned anything that actively burned oil in a long time though.
