Am I reading this correctly that you're changing synthetic oil and filter every 2K miles, on a car that does 3K miles a month???

Your Nissans I"m pretty sure has an "Oil Change Recommended" light on the dashboard that appears when the engine computer figures you need one. That is really your best bet, use that thing. It will tell you when to do it. Since Mobil 1 Extended Performance and the Fram Ultra oil filter is not much more expensive than anything else and generally perform better, use those. Any full synthetic oil you see at Walmart will do, but I favor Mobil 1 Extended Performance or Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy. Walmart usually for all that.

I noticed you're using 10w30 in one of your cars. In both cars, you should be using a 5w30, or use Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w30 for better cold flow in winter conditions and its good year around too, so Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w30 would be great for both cars.

So 100 dollars for two cars for the first oil change in 5000 miles, and then another 100 for the next one.

Your dealer is ripping you off with 5 quarts and BG MOA. The Versa takes 3.7 quarts of oil, and the Sentra takes 4.2 quarts of oil. BG MOA is absolutely unnecessary since a fully formulated oil goes in which has all the balance additives you need. (I would use BG 109, another BG product, as an engine flush every 30,000 miles, but only BM MOA at the halfway point of a very long oil change interval, like 15k mile oil changes, so its not applicable to a new car on regular oil changes.)

Dunno about EDGE stuff

Check out the Mobil 1 Extended Performance 0w20 and 5w30 as they are on rollback at Wal Mart so couple the $12 for 5quart jug rebate from Mobil 1; easy choice

Where does it say regular M1 is rated for 10k?

I thought I read here a while back that M1 is

Check this out under "limited warranty" from Mobil website

I'm with you QP, if we are reading this correct, a full synthetic oil is being changed after only a easy 2k miles.

Tina, I think your oil is being changed way too often, both money and resources are being wasted. It's OK if you want this, I'll not deny a person the right to over maintain their own car, but if you are doing it this frequently because of the dealer then I suggest they are milking you for money.

With a good synthetic oil like regular Mobil 1 5W30 or Castrol Edge or PP etc and a decent filter you should easily be able to go 6k miles between oil changes. Easy and conservative estimate, one guy here does 9k miles on a twin-turbo EcoBoost with semi-synthetic Castrol Magnatec 5W30 and his UOA (used oil analysis) shows it can do the distance and his engine is running great.

I would start changing my own oil. My default is oil and filter every 6k miles (10,000 KM), sure some go sooner and some go longer, which is OK if based on a little research (the owners manual or used oil analysis).

If you don't want to change your own oil, maybe try another dealer / garage and see what they say.

Put these two together. You are meeting the Nissan definition of "Light Conditions" (mostly freeway and moderate temperatures), which Nissan says gives an oil life of 7,500 to 10,000 miles.

With the quality full synthetic name brand oils you are considering, an oil change every 9k miles & 3 months (at present usage) would be reasonable. While an oil change every 6k miles & 2 months would be a very safe bet and still allow you to save ample time and money on your present (2k miles) situation.

It's based on dino or fullsyn oils ?
Interesting, frequent short trips isn't part of equation.

Thank you for your reply! We are also planning to bring the cars to do a CVT fluid flush around 25000 miles

Yes we do oil change every 2000 miles. My Dad insists that as to "bring out" the old oil used by the dealer.

In the Nissan manuals, the versa calls for either 5w30 or 10w30, and the Sentra calls for 0w20 as I recalled.

Yes. I agree with you that the dealer is not charging reasonably. And they add the BG MOA without prior notice and so when we had to pay they said the BG MOA was already added, you have to pay for it (I think it is 60 dollars in total for both of the cars in one oil change)

Hi, Thanks for the reply. I have not seen this page on the Nissan Mnaual. It only states that every 5000 mile perform an oil change but if you drive on rough road/short trip a lot you will need to change the oil more often. So my father said "OK, lets do the oil change more frequently to get the BG MOA stuff out of the engines" lol

Thank you for your reply! One of the reason I post here is to try to find some evidence to convey my dad not to do the 2000 mile oil change

I wonder Tina if your Nissan manual reads just like my 300ZX manual. It says in bold print "Do not use oil additives of any kind in your Nissan vehicle". I'd show them that and make them redo the oil change at no cost and reimburse you what the charged you for that unnecessary additive.

Yes that is why stated in the manuals come with the cars! Do you think I should write to Nissan to address the problem that the dealer is adding those BG MOA without customers' permission? After those two oil changes, my family do all the maintanance in our own but something like CVT flush or brake fluid flush i think we have to rely on dealer to do it. Do you think I should go to another Nissan dealer for service? Thanks a lot!

If you have a good relationship with that particular dealership, just talk to the service manager next time you go in for a service and request that you do not want any additional additives added to your fluid change service. And when it's done, just verify by receipt to make sure.

Yes, you should be able to tell the dealership not to put in the BG MOA. Consumer Rights in this country are respected usually when you assert them. The business culture in the U.S. tends to side with the customer, since its your money and they should please YOU. If they don't cooperate, then tell them they stink and go somewhere else.

tina, Tell your Dad that 2,000 mile oil changes went away 50 years ago. Seriously, engines and oils are better now. Here is what Kendall oils advertised in 1928 for example:

5K miles sounds fine to me, even on a conventional oil.

All that BG stuff should be out in two oil changes.
