Difference between synthetic and EP oil?

Hello everybody, I would like to know what is the difference between:
1. Mobil 1 and Mobil 1 Extended Performance
2. Castrol Edge and Castrol Edge Extended Performance

The price difference is about 3-4 dollars. I purchase 10w30 and 0w20 oil for the cars. Oil change interval would be 3000-5000 miles.

With a 5k mile OCI, the difference is just how much you overspent for oil.

If you must, just purchase whichever is on sale for less, and drive with confidence. Personally I'd go with a solid conventional, or blend, and pocket the difference towards retiring earlier.

You could always contact Mobil with questions on the cleaning abilities. TIG1 doesn have problems with AFE 0w20 and I haven't had any problems
With Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w30 and I use FRAM Pro Synthetic filter which is same as FRAM Ultra minus the black grippy stuff on end

While quite a bit can be garnered from a virgin oil analysis, there are surely organic compounds that can't be gauged from this form of testing.

More detergents aren't always better, and unless you've got a neglected engine you are trying to bring back to a better condition, overall levels aren't as important as service interval.

However, someone far better educated than I will come along soon that can give you more/better information.

Both Mobil 1 Extended Performance and Castrol EDGE Extended Performance are designed to go longer between oil changes at 15,000 miles.

How they do it, they don't give too much detail, but the assumption would be more PAO (Group 4) content, more TBN ( to neutralize acid buildup) and possible more shear stable polymer VII (viscosity index improvers).

So is it a better oil ? - Yes.
Will you see any benefits over a 5K mile OCI oil change interval (OCI) - Probably not.

Nothing wrong with using EP over a regular OCI, many here would. But you would be better off saving you $ with a non-EP oil at 5k miles, or extending your OCI to at least 10k miles with the EP oil.

What engines?
For a 3-5k OCI, there is no need for any of those 4 oils listed.
Mobil Super Syn, Magnatec, or even WalMart Supertec syn would work quite well for that short of an interval (again, depending on the engine and it's condition).
Heck for that short of an OCI, most any name brand conventional would be fine as well.

$12 rebate for 5 quart purchase, even in the 5 quart jug

Wal Mart will have the best price for you in Mobil 1 in 5 quart jug. Go to mobil 1 website for rebate form or you can upload on computer.

All those oils are great oils and will last past 5000 miles easily.

I have not seen anyone in this thread telling them when to change their oil, just letting them know that at 3000-5000 miles, there is plenty of life left in Mobil 1 or Castrol Syn.
If they want to waste their money only using 30-50% of the oils life, that's fine, no skin off my back. We just like letting people know they don't have to change oil (especially synthetic oil designed for a 15,000 mile interval) every 3000 miles.

Questions I have are what motor is this?? How well has it been taken care up to now?? What is the regular driving patterns dies it see?? Is it GDI or turbo boosted ??
These questions answered make a lot of difference if a oil can go anywhere near 15k miles. We have to remember that "up to 15k" is the operative phrase here. It is not guaranteed that the oil can do 15k miles in all circumstances. There are a number if instances where it would not be advisable to try that. And if one were to endeavor to do that it would be wise to run used oil analysis to check on the oils viscosity, TBN and TAN to see where these results are at along the way up to higher mileages.

Go with Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy, no need for the EP. M1 can do 10k miles with ease. Only perk I see in using it is if going to 15k miles or near that. I doubt it protects better.

Currently I am taking care of two cars. One is Nissan Versa 2016 (1600cc and CVT) and another one is Nissan Sentra 2016 (1800cc and CVT). Both of the cars have 3000 highway miles every month with very few short trips. Winter will not get down below 14 Fahrenheit usually. I use 10W30 in the Versa and 0W20 in the Sentra. Both of them are bought brand new. First two oil changes are done in the dealer in 5000 and 10000 miles. Since my family and I doubt the oil quality of the dealer, then I change the oil ourselves. We have five more oil changes between 10000 miles and currently 20000 odd miles. Thank you for your reply!

So here is the maintenance history of both the cars:

10000 mile: Mobil 1 Extended Performance and Mobil 1 filter
12000 mile: Pennzoil Platinum and Pennzoil filter
14000 mile: Castrol Edge and Pennzoil filter
16000 mile: Pennzoil Platinum and Pennzoil filter
18000 mile: Havoline and Fram filter
20000 mile: Mobil 1 Extended Performance and Fram filter

Both of the dealer's oil changes show only 5 quarts of oil (dont know what brand it is), labor cost and BG MOA (I have no clue about that item). We are charged for 50 dollars for each oil change (tire rotation and other top-off are additionally charged so we decided to do it ourselves). So 100 dollars for two cars for the first oil change in 5000 miles, and then another 100 for the next one.

EP oils are intended to allow for longer drain intervals. How long is anyone's guess since some engines in some uses chew Mobil 1 Extended Performance up in far less than 15K. A walk through the used oil analysis sub-forum will show you this.
Given the way you use these cars, you could easily go 7-8K on an OCI using any syn oil without risk. You could probably go farther than that.
I'd be more concerned about the CVTs and I'd probably do a drain and fill of the CVT fluid every 30K or so using only the costly Nissan recommended fluid. The engines will almost certainly outlive the CVTs regardless of the OCI you use.
These are relatively light cars without much power in mainly highway use, all of which might help to extend the lives of their CVTs.
