Is there even a point to buying regular Mobil 1? Is there a reason to choose it over Mobil 1 Extended Performance? I mean from the looks of things Mobil 1 EP is all around better than regular Mobil 1. Am I missing something or is there a reason why Mobil 1 stays around?

Not knocking it, just wondering uf Mobil outdid themselves and aren't wanting to give up their "name you know" golden goose.

No, it's probably the other way around - you don't need the EP. Having read the FAQ sheets on M1's web site for several years now - and having seen plenty of reports on BITOG concerning regular M1's long drain ability, and the fact that Porsche and other OEMs use regular M1 (albeit some of them use 0w40) as factor fill, and have outlandish OCI recommendations, I'm not sure why I would buy EP. No OEMs use EP as factory fill. The M1 FAQs I've read over the years basically say regular M1 can do anything EP can do. They make the statements about EP doing 15k, but then they make statements that reg. M1 can handle any OEM OCI including 18k ones by Jaguar, etal. IMO, EP could disappear and the M1 product line would be none the worse.

Hi,
bmwtechguy - SuperSyn is a Patented name for a range of base fluids. These are used in a wide variety of applications - some by other lubricant blenders and Oil Companies. They all have an enviable reputation

When Mobil 1 EP first came out it was a very robust oil but it appears it's been changed. All the AW additives look lower on paper and the Tbn is also lower. I'm not sure what they did with it.

What it needed in an oil to meet the GM spec 4718? And why wouldn't the more expensive oil meet it?

I wonder if it's because of some actual characteristic of the EP, or whether Exxon-Mobil just didn't feel like going to the trouble and expense of "certifying" it?

Come on ekpolk...expense means nothing to Mobil!!! Their balance sheet is slightly healthy at the moment (LOL). Seriously though I'm sure there is a priority list someone will get through and then there will be a label change for EP stating that it meets GM spec 4718. They obviously know how to do it already.

I was told by XOM about a year ago via email that it would meet GM4178M but it wasn't tested so they don't list it. It may be on their website under the car care section.
