Difference Between Filters

Hi all:

Saturday I purchased a 2005 Lincoln LS and was wondering which oil filter to use. I checked carstuff.com, and after plugging in my car, it had either the FL-400s or the FL-1A I believe.

Which one is correct for my car, and what is the difference?

The LS has the 3.9L DOHC V8...NOT the V6 Engine.

Those are wrong. Motorcraft FL2021 is the proper filter for the LSV8. The FL400s is for the V6 motor. Trust me, been there, done that! (See my sig)

Advance Auto parts is the best place to buy our filter. I think its still under eight bucks. You can get a purolator classic or P1, but they are like $ 11 and $15 for our car! The motorcraft filter is a good one, even though it does not have a silicone adbv. Please don't get the Fram PH 5618. It fits our car, but it's a piece of junk. Run a good 5-20 and enjoy the best driving american sedan for the money!

Hey Musicman!

I saw your sig and was hoping you would be the one to reply to this thread. I have written down the proper Motorcraft filter and will be purchasing it next time I venture into Advance Auto. Thanks for the advice! I absolutely LOVE the car, and would love to hear about your experiences (both good, and bad). I have been a Lincoln fan all my life; only driving Town Cars and Mark VIII's until Saturday. Found a 2005 LS Ultimate with 58k on it. Single owner, dealership serviced at proper intervals. Owner was an old man who was anal about his car. It's a real cream puff. I have always used MC filters and will probably continue to do so, unless someone comes along with a good reason not to. Anyway, thanks for the response, and again, I look forward to reading about your LS experiences!

Will it hurt the car in any way to use the 400s filter? I think that's what the dealership put on it, but I'd have to look again to be 100% positive.

The V8 in the Lincoln LS is NOT a modular engine. It is not the same design as the crown vics, town cars, f 150, ect. . . .

The LS uses a AJV8. It is a Jaguar design. AJV8's are used in Jags and Landrovers.
You need a different kind of filter.

I have had my LS for over two years. In that time I have tried many oil filters. The ones I would recommend are:

Purolator PureOne (Part number: PL15317)
(I personally feel this to be the highest quality filter available for our application).

or the regular Purolator, Napa Gold (wix), or motorcraft.

The 400s does NOT fit the V8 motor in the lincoln LS. Only the V6.

I'm looking for the best possible protection, as I plan to keep this car for a very long time. I plan to run 5w20 motorcraft oil, too.

Dont really have time to post a lot right now, but if your dealer somehow monkeyed an FL400s on there, you need to go to the store, buy the right filter (fl2021 or pl15317) and have them remove the wrong filter (which should not have fit at all) see with your own eyes that they havent ruined anything, and then reinstall your proper filter and top off the oil.

However, i don't think its even possible to put an fl400 type filter on there. Huge difference. Tomorrow, just get under the front bumper and see what filter really is on there just to set your mind at ease. (And mine!)

Oh, and i agree with rg200amp. The P1 is probably the best filter for our car, but i think the motorcraft unit is very good too, and its half the price. I still run under 5k ocis, so I'm perfectly happy with the MC. If i ever decide to stretch past 7k, its P1 time for sure!
