Previous years, the heater wasn't on until after Thanksgiving, but it seems we may have cooler temperature earlier this year.

you change your filters once a year? all the filters I've read said to change every three months.

Yep,lit my pilot for our "cold" front we`d gotten :^P It got cool one day, then back into the upper 80s the next day!

My parents had a filter that only needed a yearly change - but it was rather large - like a foot thick. Rather pricey too if I remember.

Our 24x16x1 pleated MERV 7's get changed every 3-4 weeks during the heavy heating seasons or the furnace trips the high limit switch during the morning warm-up of the house.

Normally the heater was running less than 20-30 minutes a day for few days, then it wasn't running at all for several days. On average the heater ran about 6-8 hours a month from end of November until mid March, so that the total running time was less than 35-40 hours, which is less than a month of running heater for northern states.

The filter I use is one of the cheapest you can buy at Home Depot or Lowe's. I need 2 filters in size 10x30, I bought the biggest size 20x30 and cut to half to make two 10x30.

I only have 1 return in my house (24x24 inches). I use those 5x5x24" pleated filters. They barely fit at 5" thick, but they can last 6 months easy. They're around $40 each and have a MERV rating of 10.

I like them MUCH better than Filtrete or other brands because those are too restrictive.

Yup...had to turn my heater on already. When the inside temp drops to around 58 degrees.....my old body gets chilled! Just a bump up in temp of 5 degrees, plus the use of propane for the heater, makes all the difference in the world in how I feel.

When my feet and hands get cold.....geez.

We replace our filter every 4-5 months. It's that expensive 3M filter from Home Depot. It's I want to say 16x25x1. the reason is my mom and sister have asthma, and the filter helps immensely, especially since she's extremely allergic to dust, and strangely cats- even though we've had two and she's never shown a reaction to them.

For the doubters, it was 12 degrees below zero 12 F (-24.444 C) in Bodie, CA the day before yesterday. That is in the hills above Mono Lake, where Clint Eastwood acted in the film High Plains Drifter. It was the national cold spot per the Pasadena Star News.

I notice many houses in the Dallas / Ft Worth TX area have a chimney.

Does it get that cold in Texas to really need a chimney, why can't they just use their A/C unit for heating ?

We have gas 2 fireplaces with a shared chimney, used it may be once or twice in the first year when we moved in 14 years ago. Didn't use either fireplace since.

No idea the furnace size, it is the original 1970 unit. The furnace is at middle of the house just outside the master bedroom. The fan is a little noisy after 40 years of services.

Sorry I made a typo; it should have read:

By the way, in Truckee, CA the low tonight is forecast to be down to 14 F.
