that zinc maximum (actually phosphorus) for API SM (ILSAC GF-4) products only applies to SAE 0W-20, 0W-30, 5W-20, 5w30 and 10w30 viscosity grades. Other SAE grades do not need to comply. Incidentally, ILSAC GF-5, due in a couple of years will drop phosphorus maximums to 700ppm (or about 770ppm of zinc from ZDDP).

I did know that, but thanks for the heads up.

yes that is true, but what you need to keep in mind is that sometimes the 40 and 50 wts sometimes have the lower amounts anyway.furthermore, although API SJ and SL have a mandate max that is higher, they have no mandate for a minimum.sometimes they contain the lower amounts anyway.

VOA and UOA,are your friend.plus, msds are tricky.for example, they can say <2%,or what ever, but still contain SM type levels.

Yes.
This stems primarily from my observations about current 'Diesel oils' used in gas engines, and their higher additives.

Why? Start looking out for the magnesium levels plus, they are putting things in there that a regular old VOA or UOA won't pick up. Additive chemistry is some amazing stuff. Everything they are doing is to reduce wear.

Can you elaborate on Magnesium please?
