Last weekend the brother in law came over and asked if I could check out his car since it was making a grinding noise in the front end when he stepped on the brakes. I said ok, brake pads are probably starting to wear through and grind. He's in college and works full-time to pay for it so he doesn't have much money to spare. I told him come on over next Sunday (today) and I'll take care of it for him and we will do an oil change. He was way over, 10K on Castrol GTX from a local chain but I've put 2 quarts in it the past few months. The pads we're only $20 at autozone, which for that price couldn't pass up with the warranty. Got some defy for my Taurus and got the filter for his car.
So yesterday I pick up the pads and a few other things for the job. Today we started at 12:15pm. Jacked the car up, put the jack stands under the car and went to work. Started off by pulling the drain plug and draining the oil, man it was black. Pulled the first tire off and pulled off the pad holder, the first pad looked decent and the rotor looked good. Go to pull of the back pad and it was bare metal and the rotor was ruined. So off to autozone we go. Pick up 2 rotors for the car. Came back and got the rotors and pads put on in no time. Time to pull out the ecotec filter and change it, it was a napa proselect with 10K on it. It had a major failure and was blown out in a few spots (I'll post pics later). Put the STP oil filter in, put the drain plug in and filled it up with 4qts formula shell and an opened quart of edge with Ti I had laying around. I probably won't get a STP oil filter for this car again, I didn't like how it fit but it was made in USA. Took the car out to break in the brakes, got some air in his tires and sent him on his way.
Total time was 1.5 hours plus the trip to AZ. Cost me $100 by the end of everything but he helps me out along around the house and is here when we need him. I feel better knowing he got good quality parts and it was done correctly.
The most important thing is I got to scratch that itch of working on vehicles and changing the oil because mine don't need it yet.
