Did I screw up?

I replaced the AC Delco PF44 Oil Filter on my 2003 2500HD w/ the 6.0L engine with a Napa Gold 1522. I had a 2002 2500 HD that used the longer filter like the Napa Gold 1522; however, it appears that this year they've decided to use the shorter filter (Napa Gold 1402 I think?) Do I need to replace it, or will it be ok? Thanks.

Certainly it wasn't a bad mistake. I am not sure any of the filter
substituting will do much harm if it fits unless you use a filter without
a ADBV on an engine that needs it. I also haven't seen any
convincing evidence that the more expensive NAPA/WIX filters are
better than the AC's. There isn't much hard evidence that inferior
filters such as Fram cause more wear and shorter life. I would stick
with the specified AC, or oversize if your number is available at the
places that sell them for $3-4. I have found out that the well
regarded Purolators and Hastings have less filter area than the
equivalent AC.

I think the NAPA Gold is one of the best filters around. If you go to the Wix site www.wixfilters.com you can compare the two filters to see if they have the same bypass valve setting and gasket size. If they do you are using a better filter than standard at least in my opinion.

The 2003 engines are exactly the same as the 2002 engines. The 2002 engine required the AC PF-59. This filter has the ADBV and is the same filter as the AC PF-44 except for the length. I think it just a case of GM narrowing their inventory to make one filter fit as many engines as possible. Plus since the 44 is smaller than the 59 there is less waste of materials and oil that is left behind in the used filter. I wouldn't be surprised if the EPA had something to do with this too.
I still use the larger filter on mine and have not had any problems.
If you were to take it in for engine warranty work I would install the PF-44 prior to the visit. This way no questions will be asked.
