Last Sunday I turned on the TV and it immediately started downloading and installing a major update to the GUI. In my case it has eliminated the TCL lag. Don't know if Google or TCL fixed this. Don't care who, just glad its been fixed. Thank whomever.

TCL has sketchy direct connections with the Chinese government as it is partially owned by them and the communist government has heavily subsidized them to grow their market share.
U.S. Department of Homeland Security has been investigating back door security issues in their TVs since very late 2020. I assume being they are still allowed to be sold here and still allowed into the google play store it is ok.
I believe some hacking groups found some back doors but Im not interested enough to care, just throwing this out there.

Intentional or not I guess depends how much you trust the communist government. I do think if it was serious they would get banned like Huawei did regarding cell phones in the USA. Then again, maybe not if concern for retribution against USA cell phone companies of which I think Apple is the only one left.
I had a Huawei phone BTW, loved it. Sold all over much of the world, the new ones very nice also Now the Honor (brand) it no longer is part of Huawei and nice looking phones.Huawei still makes nice phones, not sold here.

Wow, you didn't mention anything about the thread topic. I was relaying a happy pleasant experience and you had to bring it down. I understand your concern but IMO YMMV, I'm not as much of a fearmongerer as you.

I guess some call information "fear mongering" ?

Again nothing about the topic of the helpful update. It made the TV perfect. Great picture, now with a snappy interface.

My TCL Roku auto updates Roku system stuff but I find the various streaming apps need to be be updated by me just using the update feature. Still pissed about the screen developing a very thin horizontal line. But I'm not averse to getting another TCL. I do like Roku OS but I'm sure Google is fine too.

Dude. This has no place here and nothing to do with @Hermann original post. If you're so anxious to bloviate about your travels, join a travel forum.

What are they going to get off of a TV? Someone binge watched a season of some series on Netflix?

The TV (or any device) becomes a relay point on your home network. It can see and probe other devices on your network, and it can act as a relay point (aka proxy or VPN) for external actors who want to access other parts of the internet, or send spam, from your home IP address.

Yes, this is why it's smart to put IOT devices that you don't trust on their own VLAN/VLAN's with client isolation enabled. The only time this becomes problematic is if you plan on using AirPlay or want to cast to the device.

That's what the guest account on my router is for.
