Dexron III for Cold Weather

Valvoline MaxLife ATF is what I use. No issues in my truck.

Maxlife ATF is close enough to DexIII. I’d run it and not look back especially since it’s for a power steering system.

Maxlife has a higher Brookfield visosity at -40 than Mobil and Amsoil which are both about 10,000 while MaxLife is 11,000. Plus it is singifcantly thinner at 100 degress, being only 5.9 cSt. So I see no advantage to the LV. Furthermore, the Redline D4 has a Brookfield rating of 5200, which is the best I have found so far, and it is 7.5 cSt at 100 degress.

@Oldswagon sorry, I did not link the photo for some reason. Its my usual go to, Co-op ATF SL. Made by Federated Co-op. Its widely available through the prairies and even into BC but I am not sure out east.

Thanks for this information. It is a bargain for what appears to be a good ATF. I haven't seen Coop products here either, so I am not sure if I can get it.

@4wd it’s great to see that this is still available. On my last ATF change, I switched from the OEM Dexron VI to this Mobil 1 synthetic ATF and it greatly reduced the incidence of shuttering that I would sometimes get in hot weather for the LaSabre’s 4T65E transmission. It’s getting to be about time to do another drain and fill, but I’m having a difficult time finding this product and do not and will not use Dexron VI regardless of what GM says about backwards compatibility. And I say this because the LeSabre’s original owner , although he religiously changed the ATF on time, he had last used Dexron VI for his last ATF change and I noticed a distinct difference after changing to this Mobil 1 Dex III product. I’m not quite able to tell from the picture you posted, but can you or anyone here tell me where this product can still be purchased? Please and thank you

Know a guy who pulled an offshore boat with a restored 454 Suburban - 3 other guys/gear (and Exxon cards ) …
He’d cook ATF until he went to Mobil 1 ATF …

Even PetroCan Duradrive has -54c poor point but Brookfield of 11,500. The LV is 11,600.

I am looking for a synthetic Dexron II/III ATF with the best cold weather properties for a PS system. Amsoil and Mobil 1 both have a Brookfield viscosity at -40 of around 10000 cP. Are there any better options available or is this as good as it gets?

Lubegard Complete Synthetic PS fluid has a pour point of -61°f, great fluid, i use it in my OBS f350 ps pump and almost no whine from it.

It might in very cold weather. In a previous vehicle Mobil 1 ATF was notably better than the OEM fluid in the extreme cold.

Another option would be Valvoline MV Import synthetic atf, its Dex3 as well

Mobil syn ATF as others have posted, pennzoil platinum LV 5.9cst 10,040 mrv or high mileage 7.2 cst 12,000 mrv atf are very good. You could also use Valvoline MaxLife ATF 5.9 cst 11,000 mrv for better cold performance and it's available on shelves for cheap. Dex 3 sheered easily so these newer thin fluids should still hold up better.

Have you considered adding LubeGard additive or LubeGard Shudder Fix?
