My Owners Manual for my 2007 Chevy Cobalt SS 2.4L (non- supercharged) is silent regarding Gen 1 or 2 oil...does it matter if I get Gen2 and its additional benefits over Gen1 won't apply since no turbo etc? Will it affect my engine having the Gen2?

I am using a synthetic blend 5w30 from QS.

Thanks for any suggestions.

dexos1 wasn't introduced until 2011, so no surprise about it not being in your manual.

I think you will be fine sticking with your QS blend and don't have to worry about dexos anything!

Thought that Dexos started after 2007. Your engine won't need it, since it's pretty basic. Dexos gave a single standard oil for GM dealers to stock-- whether you had a low output engine or a turbo. Also a source of licensing income to GM. Wouldn't sweat meeting Dexos at all since you're out of warranty. Might want to look for SN plus, but that's not even necessary since that car's not going to experience LSPI.

It doesn't need to be the most recent SN or SN+ either. But either one works fine in your application.

I know our 2006 Buick Lacrosse 3.8l does not call for Dexos , but it does call for Dexron 6 .

Our 2015 Chevy Sonic 1.8l MPFI calls for Dexos Gen 1 & Dexron 6 . Gen 2 was not out in 2015 , I do not think .

God bless

Thanks! I use to have dealership do the oil changes and they put dexos1 in for it...too many errors by dealerships in our area...(i.e. oil cap left off, filter cartridge cap cracked, drain plug impact tightened, oil over-filled or not drained properly, etc) so I decided to go back to my high school years and do myself. Didn't realize the licensing of oil brands by manuf. was such a learning curve. I guess you could say...thank god I'm out of warranty right? Thanks again for your reply.

Dealerships do not put their best mechanics in the oil change line.

Our Sonic has a timing belt . Do you think Dexos Gen 2 would be worth it in the 3.8l Buick ? It does have a timing chain .

Thanks , :-)

Sure, why not. Dexos1 Gen2 was originally developed to deal with LSP! issues in GDI/TGDI engines, but it also offers reduced deposits and timing chain wear.

Our oldest car is a 5.0l 1991 Caprice Throttle Body FI system . ( Timing chain . )

The 2006 Buick Lacrosse 3.8l is Multi Port FI ( timing chain ) , as is the 2015 Chevy Sonic 1.8l ( timing belt ) .. All with automatic transmission .

So , no GDI .

I have several jugs of 5w30 dino oil I had planned to run in the Buick .

By all means run the 5W30 conventional in the Buick. Next time around, you might want to consider a quality Dexos`1 Gen2 synthetic 5W30. With the Mobil 1 and Pennzoil rebates ($10-12/5qt jug), it's actually cheaper than conventional.

I purchased Shell Formula dino oil , 5 quart jugs , at Home Depot . About a year ago , for $ 10 a jug .

I have only used a Pennzoil conventional 10w30 in my wife's 2006 Cadillac CTS 3.6L that is a timing chain nightmare. Never have had an issue with it. Still a keeper car. GM said it needed Mobil 1 5w30, but I never used any of it. On some of the Caddy forums, this motor has a lot of timing chain issues. I never have had any issue with the motor at all. Each person can decide what fits within their comfort zone. I don't even use a dexos approved oil in my previous 2013 1500 5.3L or my current 2015 2500 6.0L. I just don't waste a lot of time worrying about it.
