You might have gotten the idea that I turn away from dexos oil, but I didn't say or imply that. I said I just plain don't worry about it or focus on it. Most of my oil, I get from my commercial oil supplier. Some I buy at the local farm and home store. None of what I get is on the approved dexos list. I wouldn't even have known unless I decided to check it out because of threads like this one. I just really don't worry that it isn't. dexos is a ok standard. if one's paranoia gland will not allow them to deviate from the approved list, then concentrate on the approved list and have a good time. I just don't worry about it. And none of my GM vehicles has ever had an issue with the oils I have used in them. I am not convinced that dexos brings something more substantial to the party than most of the other modern oil standards.

Fair enough . What , may I ask , is your Oil Change Interval ? That can have a big influence on the outcome .
Also , consider , to my knowledge , all Dexos 1 Gen1 is at least synthetic blend ( if not full synthetic ) . Not sure about Gen2 ?
I have the impression , synthetic oil is better at cleaning & keeping the inside of the engine clean ? And flows better on start up ?
On engines that use engine oil to operate cam phases , I want as good a cleaning action as I can reasonable get . That sounds like an expensive repair , if the oil passages ( small ? ) plug up ?
I do not have a turbo engine or Direct Gas Injection , nor do I want one . But if I did , I would probably go to Gen 2 .
All this is concerning the Sonic 1.8l . The Buick 3.8l & the caprice 5.0l do not call for Dexos and get name brand conventional oil .
I try to buy oil / filters on sale .
