As stated in an earlier post about a month ago I discovered that Pennzoil Dex VI was avaiable in my area. While in another auto parts store today I saw Valvoline Dex VI Synthetic for sale. Same price as Pennzoil Dex VI dino.

Man, I must be getting old! Dexron is now up to VI??? Shoot, I think I still have a couple of bottles of Dexron II in my garage...

No Type A in my collection, though- last time I saw that stuff was at a Union 76 on I-5 near the Onalaska interchange; Calmatic brand. Type A ATF used to practically burn my skin from its additives...

I just wonder how much improvement Dex VI is over Dex II...

DexronVI is an ATF specification for an improved Dexron hydraulic fluid that has better cold temp operation and improved anti-oxidation characteristics. It can have a base of Group II+ or Group III mineral oils, or be made composed of synthetic Group IV PAO and Group V esters or a mix of all the above, but the specification does not specifiy the base oil(s). Generally, specifications specify the viscosites and tests the fluid has to pass before if can meet the specification.

With the exception of Chrysler's ATF+4 spec, which does stipulate the exact Lubrizol additive package that must be used as well as the approved Group III base oils.

I bought some dino Pennzoil Dex VI at Pep Boys a few weeks ago for 5.99 per quart. While at CSK the other day I spotted the Valvoline Synthetic Dex VI for 5.99 per quart. I am quite sure that it said synthetic and not synthetic blend. I will check again the next time I am there. I like the Dex VI. Put the Pennzoil Dex VI in my TH700 and the shifts seem noticeably smother than with the Coastal Dex III that was in it before.

Nice find whitewolf...

Interesting to see Warren Unilube/Coastal picked up a license. Also interesting to see that some company other than ExxonMobil appears to be making GM's ATF.

I just bought 4 gallons of the GM Vehicle Care DEXRON®-VI ATF from gmpartsdirect.com for $75.52 or $4.72 per qt. I haven't used it yet. All my vehicles currently have Dex-III in them. I wonder if I'll be able to tell the difference, I doubt it but we'll see.

Some eBay sellers claim to have the new Red Line D6 ATF available. This is for Dexron VI applications, according to Dave at Red Line.

Well the GM posted list of approved fluids looks quite comprehensive but I don't see a Redline product on it. I suppose that it's possible that they just have not been added yet since it does say that the approval list is going to be updated on a regular basis. Maybe the question to ask Dave is what is the license approval number because if they don't have one it would seem to me that the product is not a Dexron VI approved fluid.

As mentioned on the Red Line D6 thread:

"Nice try. I'm not getting embroiled in that debate. The whole Amsoil/Red Line/Royal Purple licensing/specs question has been hashed and rehashed on BITOG. The upshot is that the boutique oil manufacturers make lubes that often greatly exceed manufacturers' specs but don't wish to spend the big $ to get the certifications.

"I'm only offering an alternative, for those who are aware of the pros and cons of the debate. But I will say that if it were my vehicle, I'd use these products even within warranty (but following manufacturers' change intervals during the warranty period) with confidence."
