The batteries are the main lifetime limit factor. There are probably only 3 or so manufactures that have the size and price point need for them. Does anyone disassemble them when recycled and have clues to the manufacturer? Are certain brands having different sized battery, usually larger on the better brands?

My Milwaukee hammer drill killed its batteries, the drill itself was tough and powerful, but its hard to cough up $160 for two new ones. I took apart the battery pack and it is just nicad c-size rechargables soldered to together, they were 2.4 amp hour ones which I couldn't find anywhere for a reasonable price( I assume it means they are good batteries!). I bought a cheap 1.5 amp hour pack for $20 off ebay but it doesn't last half as long as the original packs.

Rigid has a lifetime warranty on the batteries and the drill so I ended up getting a hammer drill from them, for $150. Its a lithium ion one too but the pack is as big as the old nicad packs so it should have plenty of juice.

I have a Craftsman 18V cordless drill. Standard (not li-ion) batteries. 2 batteries lasted about 2 years with moderate use. I bought a no name replacement battery after the OE's died. Similar amount of run time/power. The only thing about the replacement is that when I put it on the charger the Red LED indicating "bad cell/replace" stays lit even though the battery will still charge. The yellow "charging" and green "charged" LED's won't ever light up with the generic, which is kind of a PITA guessing when it's fully charged.

I am a tad biased.... used to work at Black & Decker's Easton, MD plant... making DeWalt cordless tools, putting new production items into production....
